Anyone use your own arithmetic?

After much deliberation, I decided to continue with the arithmetic that we have been using instead of changing over to Singapore. We have been using Ray's Arithmetic and the classic curriculum workbooks that are keyed to Ray's. It has been working really well for us. Just wondering if anyone else has done this, not necessarily Ray's but not Singapore, and how it worked for you. BTW we will be using BLHFHG. This is the only thing that I changed as far as the suggestions for Beyond.

We use CLE for math. My ds used a program called investigations in ps up until I pulled him out for 5th grade so I knew that he would struggle going into Singapore. He also does very well with the spiral method and so CLE has been a great fit for him.

My DD in 3rd is using Math Mammoth and HOD still works beautifully! I try to stay within the math time allotment for the guide we're in. I also sometimes do the math activities in the guide even though they don't match up with our program. It might be as part of school or as part of snack time! They are just such fun!

Yes, we found that my DD didn't really do well with the Singapore way of math so we use A Beka Arithmetic. Now she loves math.

Yes my older kids use different math, CLE and CD. My younger two use Singapore. I have to say though that way back when I wish I had just bit the bullet and switched them all over to Singapore even though they would have had to go way back in level. My younger two that have only done Singapore do so much better with math. But HOD works great no matter what math you use.

We are using Math-U-See and it seems to be working well along with HOD.

We are using Beyond and are using the Saxon K-3 program for Math. We just do this in place of the math listed in the Teacher's Guide. It works out just fine!

We've used Ray's and Singapore, as well as many other things prior to my homeschooling. I have to say Singapore is my favorite, and if you can start with it fairly young it's awesome. But, if you are already doing another math and are experiencing success with it, I think it's a good idea to continue it, especially at the older grade levels. Since your dc are quite young, I'd consider doing Singapore with them. I can say that we used Ray's, and while I liked it, I felt like we were not getting to all of the math skills we needed to, as Ray's was primarily focused on computation. When my ds went to take his standardized test, he hadn't done many of the math skills on the test. However, since we switched to Singapore, my dc always seem to be ahead of what's on the tests. Now, I do not think the tests are the end all, and I did think Ray's was fun to teach, easy to do, and had a good computation focus. So, you should do whatever you feel would be best for your dc, as you know what's going to fit your wishes the best, and any math program does work with HOD!

As you can see from reading the excellent dialogue in this entire thread, moms can use any math with HOD happily, so you should choose what makes you the most content.

HTH!
In Christ,
