Using HOD for high school?

Post by Sue G in PA » Thu Apr 15, 2010 10:41 am

I thought I would make this a new thread since I am looking at using the level AFTER RTR for 9th grade (in 2 years if it is ready!). I was hoping to get some input (Carrie!) as to how that would work before I decide on my 7th graders curriculum for next year. IF I could use the next program after RTR, I would then go ahead and start him in CTC next year, do RTR for 8th and then the next program for 9th. If not, my plans will be different. Any help or suggestions from HOD vets here? Carrie? :)

There are some threads on this for some moms using CTC for high school. Carrie gave her rec's there. I'd guess there would be much less you'd have to add to the later guides to make it high school worthy, compared to CTC. The extensions might have you covered in all but math and literature study (some use dithor in 9th w/higher level reading books)...and you'd need maybe some tweaks to the LA. Just my guess though! I think the original thread for CTC in 9th was by marsha...Id search for you but have a crying babe in arms.

Riding on your question because we are considering this also with some additions. I know Carrie will get to this. I think they are doing conventions right now. :D I have asked Carrie about this as well a bit. Anyway just wanted to say I think there are a few of us considering this. I have been looking. There is nothing that comes close to what a HOD for high school would be. I have been searching for months. Found a lot of good stuff but nothing like HOD. It's made me realize even more how lucky we are to have HOD. :D

Hi,
I am definitely wanting to use HOD for highschool for my oldest dd. My husband and I have actually figured out how to make that happen.
Over these past few months I have begun to truly appreciate HOD and the teaching tools Carrie gives through the curriculum. I love the flexibility of the program as well. In our situation our oldest dd has definitely benefitted from slowing down and doing half-days (though part of that reason has come from taking on the care of my mother). Through HOD we have been able to find the gaps in dd's learning and begin to fill them in without holding back other areas of learning (which was something that I kept doing with dd and leaving us feeling very frustrated and curriculum never completed). At this point we are only half-way through CTC but dd is retaining and improving in her skills.
So all that said to come to this point. My hubby and I feel that to give her extra time to "catch-up" we have decided to extend her middle years by doing 2 years of 7th and two years of 8th. By SC law she has until she is 21 to graduate with a diploma. Thus, if we do that she can finish CTC through the summer, start RTR sometime late fall, and progress with the guides until the last one. Now here's the gold at the rainbow. By extending those middle years the last guide will be dd's 9th grade year. Traditonally it will fit because the focuses will be geography and biology, and depending what resources Carrie uses I may or may not have to add much to it to make it work to justify for credits.
I firmly believe that if I stay the course by using HOD in this manner, my dd will be more than ready to tackle those more demanding years of 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

This is exactly what I am planning on doing. I figure I will have to re-evalute each year, but currently our plan is to do CTC for 7th and progress from there. You can always add in more if you feel you need to beef things up down the road.

I have one that I will definitely extend her Jr High for exactly the same reason. And I really feel for her the last two HOD guides pretty mush as written will probably be on target for high school for her. I have another that is a bit ahead and she will do RTR for 8th and we will add Geography to it to cover her high school geography requirement. Then hopefully we can find a way to get what we want for her by beefing up the next two history cycle guides to be written. She will probably mostly skip the HOD geography year as it will come out too late for her but that gives her a year to study Bible in depth with some added world view. My other kids will either hit perfect or have geography in tenth grade which to me would be fine as well. So I am hoping that on both ends of the spectrum it could work for us. The other reality I face is I would have to do my own and the realization on that is like I said before it will not be the great thing that we have with HOD. So hoping we would not have to go that way. :D

Anyway just wanted to offer that other solution for kids that will hit HOD geography too late adding it to an earlier year maybe might be an option. I wish we could have the HOD geography manual to combine it all but I love that Carrie is generous enough to share her sources with us. :D

Ladies,

I will link you to this thread by 1shortmomof4, in which I give a link to a previous thread on some possible ways to make CTC high school worthy. Link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6027 These ideas may be of help to you as you ponder your options for your son. We are currently researching options for our own son who will be in 9th grade next year and are finding it interesting to put together his curriculum! We will discuss possibilities of adding to RTR and the forthcoming guides more in the future, as they actually come out in print form. :D Just know that you are not alone as you ponder your high school options! We are on the same journey. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I am so going to take that as a "Yes"! I really feel like we could use the next two guides after RTR as a good part of our high school and I would use RTR as high school if we were there. I would rather have and Love HOD as our base and beef that up than have something that was already beefed up but that I would really be wishing was HOD.
