Hi guys,

Wondering if Little and Preparing both study world history? Do they combine nicely? We're starting Preparing with my 5th grade boys;

My girls are 5 and 7 years old....looking at Little Hearts (RED BOOK) My question is: does this put all 4 kids studying WORLD history?

Hi, Lisa! We are using Preparing (5th grade) and Little Hearts (2nd grade) this year. Yes, they both cover World History. I have been very pleased with how well the two programs have meshed together. I am using Little Hearts with a second grader, so he's a bit "old" for the guide but he loves it and has had a great year. He sits in on almost all of Preparing also. The two programs will not always cover topics at the exact same time. Little Hearts focuses more on American History when you get to that point in time while Preparing maintains more of a focus on World History. So, there is not always a perfect match up. But, overall, they blend together quite well; especially the first half of the guides, when you will be covering alot of Biblical history.

We've been doing Preparing & LHFHG this year, and it has been wonderful!! I haven't tried to combine anything that my kids are doing, but they still hear bits & pieces of what they're each doing and we occasionally all dive into something fun if it's enhanced by more participants. It has been super-easy on me as the mom because each of these guides fits what my kids need to be learning skill-wise, maturity-wise, time spent on school, etc. Those guides fit them right where they are, soo it's open & go for me and they feel successful and are engaged in the learning!

Once we got into a routine, we would typically start work from the guides around 8:30 and finish by about 12:30 or 1. You'll have a great year if those 2 guides are where your kids place best on the placement chart. I wouldn't worry too much about what they're studying in history as any of the HOD guides work well together. Having your child in the guide that they're ready for skill-wise will make your year much more smooth. (Does that make sense? What I'm trying to say is that it would be a lot more work for you to attempt to combine a 10 or 11 yo with a 5 yo no matter what you're using because there's a HUGE gap in their abilities and the level of material they're ready for. HOD does a great job of making it relatively easy for you to combine kids who are somewhat close in age - like your 5 & 7 yo - and having the guides written to use skills they're ready for and move them along with what they need to learn. AND it's all laid out for you and doesn't take near the work of trying to use something more one-size-fits-all. )
