Hi ladies! I will be doing LHTH with my son next fall. He will be turning 5 in October. I have a couple of questions. How is handwriting covered? I didn't notice any handwriting books that went along with this. I have been really working with my daughter this past year on her pencil grip. She will be finishing up LHFHG this June. She has gotten better, but not much. She has pretty handwriting, but her hand gets tired quickly. My son's is worse than hers is and I would like to work on his this year some so that he doesn't have the trouble that she has had this past year by the time he gets to LHFHG. I had thought about ordering the K handwriting book for him this year in LHTH and doing the 1st grade handwriting book with him during LHFHG. What do you think? Would that be too much?

Also, do you do any preschool workbooks to go along with LHTH?

We have been doing the 1st grade handwriting book with LHFHG and it has worked out fine. You don't have to do every line and I have spread it out a bit more. I would think at age 5 your plan is a good one.

I have been doing the first two rod and staff preschool books, Adventures with Books and Counting with Numbers along with LHTH. It's worked well so far.

I'm so glad this question was posted. I have a little guy who'll turn 5 in Dec. and he's wanting to start writing more so now I know what to do!!! These questions/answer posts are very, very helpful!!!!!

I never did any formal Handwriting book for my son at that age. He is an October baby. He is 6 right now.We had started the LHFHG half-speed when he was about to turn 5. It just seemed like he would write things down after asking how to spell them or Iwould "dash" letters on a personal size dry erase board for him to trace. He just wasn't into the "formal" workbook. He did like it this past year when I got a book from the Dollar store with Spiderman on it that had each of the 26 letters of the alphabet and a few words on each page. That has been the extent of our handwriting. Now we do a little copywork each week. He likes to write his own things.
It was so cute today...he was writing a message to his sister while they were playing in their separate "houses" they made. He spelled everything right and even had two contractions! "I'm thinking when did he learn about those?" I have to save that little letter for evaluation if i can get my hands on it.
Sorry, i digress... maybe because sometimes things just happen more naturally than we think they will.

For LHTH, there is some writing, but it is of shapes and that nature more. Like my ds has been drawing things for his "Count on Me" pages, working on fine motor skills in his art projects, cutting for his Number book in LHTH's math, etc. I've loved this as it is strengthening his fine motor skills without pushing him too fast to do his letters. However, with your little one being right on the bubble of ages between LHTH and LHFHG, I can easily see adding a K handwriting book (we loved "A Reason for HW K" for our dc), and the R & S Kindergarten books from LHFHG. This is a great idea because you are not shooting yourself in the foot by doing this as you can still use LHFHG the next year as it is written, choosing the "A Reason for HW A" (or something similar) book, and the "Thinking Skills" book. Good question!

We have recently combined DD2(5) and DD3(3.5) in LHTH and we are using the K level books out of LHFHG with DD1. Handwriting and the fine motor skills workbooks, as well as math and phonics. It's working out really well!!
