Decided to come to the experts to help me figure out how to tweak LHTH for our youngest. We started him in LHTH last fall at just 3 with the plan to do it two years in a row. He is doing wonderfully and I now realize I need to tweak some for round 2. He will start this fall, about a month before he turns 4. I will repeat Bible, devotional (with different books), action rhyme and the art activities. However, I need some "bridge-the-gap" resources for math and phonics. Here is where we are at and what our goals will be:
Phonics: doing wonderful with letter recognition and sounds. Will be looking to build skills in lower case recognition and maintain, solidify skills with uppercase recognition and letter sounds.
Math: Can count and count objects from 1-10 very well. Will be looking to build skills in number recognition (not there now) and count to 20.
Writing: not there now, building coordination skills with LHTH acitivities. We will start him in Handwriting Without Tears in the fall.
Our oldest is doing Singapore Math and I know I do not want to get there until age 5, so need a year's worth of something else.
He won't be ready for TRL in the fall, but I may consider it next spring. Will need to re-evaluate then. So I need something for at least 1/2 a school year.
I briefly considered LHFHG at 1/2 speed, but I don't think he will be ready to get the full value from it. I just don't think that is right for him. I am going to the midwest convention next week, YIPEE!, so thought I would get some advice. Thanks everyone!

This year I've done the Rod and Staff workbooks for preschool that aren't used in the next curriculum. The first is Adventures with Books and the second is Counting with Numbers. The first focuses on being able to circle and make an x, color neatly, left from right and concepts like bigger biggest etc., as well as being able to cut and paste. Counting is for numbers 1 through 10, writing them and using them. I have enjoyed using them, a page at a time for my 4 year old. He don't like to sit for long so they have been a nice introduction to sitting still to do some work.

Hi Countrymom! Nancy already gave a good idea. I'll throw out an idea along the same lines. You could have him do the "R & S Finding the Answers" and "Do It Carefully" from LHFHG. Then, when you get to LHFHG, you can have him do the "Thinking Skills" option. You could also have him do some beginning "Explode the Code" books slowly. These are fun, short, work on fine motor skills, and are inexpensive. You could also get other Thorton Burgess books to read aloud for fun at your leisure. There are a bunch of excellent ones, just choose other ones than the ones used in LHFHG. Just a few ideas!

Depending on how ready your 4 year old is for the writing required in math, you could very slowly begin the Earlybird Kindergarten math (along with using the activities in the LHFHG guide). This would be a good way to raise the math level without it being overwhelming. You could also consider adding Do It Carefully/ Finding the Answers from LHFHG, and the handwriting K book from LHFHG, and possibly beginning phonics whenever your child seems ready. By borrowing the items your child needs from LHFHG, and doing them along with LHTH, you won't have to come up with your own learning plan. Then, when she moves into LHFHG the following year, she could move on to the first grade options if needed.
