Can you do LHTH for 2 years

Post by Tracee » Thu Mar 18, 2010 12:17 pm

I was wondering if it was possible to do LHTH for 2 years. This will be our first year with HOD and I'm going to start my 3.5 year old twins this summer. They know how to sing the alphabet, and numbers 1-5, but that is about it. Poor dc, I've neglected them a bit as far as any type of formal schooling. Should I plan on doing LHTH for 2 years, or LHFHG for 2 years. Either way, I think for us it would be best if we kept them right in the middle of the age range for each level, so that would mean 2 years of either one. Which one do you think would be best done in 2 years?

Thanks,
Tracy

This has been one of the most helpful message boards. It is only adding to my excitement to get started with HOD. Thank you all so much.

Your twins are doing great! No neglect there :D

I would do LHFHG over two years instead of LHTH. And there was a recent thread on this that you might find helpful. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5818

Once you decide which one you'll do over two years, you can read the "half-speed" threads for ideas about how to do it.

HTH!!

I'm excited for you to start HOD! We are huge fans! :D

I would also choose doing LHFHG in two years. You never know how much they are going to take off with learning during the year you do LHTH... and there are SO MANY ways you can spread LHFHG over two years to make it work best for all involved.

Hi Tracy! I really think either way could work very well for your family! :D
Maybe you could go through LHTH as written this year (with younger options)- & then at the beginning of next year decide if you want to go through LHTH one more time (with the older options & different Bible & devotional), or if your children are ready to start LHFHG at half-speed. I know both options have been done & both have seemed to work well for others. This year we are going through LHTH with our 3 oldest girls- next year our twins will move on to LHFHG, while their younger sister (who will be 4) will go through LHTH again with the older options & the other Bible & devotional. :D
Praying you find the right decision for your family!

With one of our dc, we did LHTH over 1 1/2 years, and then did LHFHG over 1 1/2 years, so that would be an option for you too. :D We loved this! It let us start half-speed with LHTH, and then switch to full-speed when we could tell he was ready. We then started half-speed with LHFHG, and switched to full-speed when we could tell he was ready. We homeschool from mid-August to the end of May, taking the summer off for a break. The break in the middle was just fine, though we did continue with phonics through the summer when doing LHFHG, just to keep that going. This kind of half-speed then full-speed with a summer break wherever it falls has been just fine with the younger guides. Now that we are doing BHFHG, we are starting half-speed until summer break, and then we will go full-speed with BHFHG 4 days a week from mid-August to the end of May to finish it. From that point on, we'll do a guide a school year. I think by BHFHG or PHFHG it's nice to do it all in a row for consistency and retention, as then they are older and truly will be able to retain so much more. This is what we've done with our middle ds. With our oldest ds, he's pretty much always done a guide a year at full-speed (other than LHTH) and done well too. So, I think the 2 of them are thriving and doing equally well, though they have had different pacing with the guides based on their ages and needs. If I were you, I'd look at the pacing that seems to fit your dc best now - either half-speed or full-speed LHTH and work from there. You may just want to start half-speed, and if it becomes obvious they are ready for more, then go full-speed. Here is a link to a past thread about doing guides half-speed:

I just thought I would pipe in to say I just started LHTH with my just turned three year old. We are going to go at half speed so she'll finish LHTH in March 2012. It seems to be going really well so far although we have only just started. LHFHG we will start in March 2012 but we will probably be at full speed at that point.

I have been wondering about this, also, with my youngest who turned 2 in December. She is very bright and has amazed us already with what she understands. I think she would enjoy LHTH (she loves jumping in on her brother's Bible songs and rhymes from LHFHG), but I was thinking it might be better to start her in the fall and do LHTH twice with her. The first time with the younger Bible/devotional books, and the second time with the older Bible/devotional books. As it is, if I start her in the fall or early in 2011, she will be 4.5 or just 5 when we start LHFHG, and I don't want to start her on that any earlier than that, do I? :?

I second this thought. We started LHFHG with our dc when they were 4.5 yo, and I wouldn't have wanted to start it any earlier. We then started it half-speed for awhile, and that was perfect. :D

Thanks, Julie for confirming that. I just had gotten a little unsure after reading all the posts about doing LHTH for 1 year and then moving to LHFHG over 2 years, but again, we all have to place our children where they fit best. Thanks, again for your reply. :D
