Question about LA in Beyond and/or Bigger.

I'm really interested in trying the LA in HOD Beyond, but I'm really scared to do the program because I can't figure out when certain things are taught, how they are taught or if they are taught. At the moment I am using CLE 1st reading and LA. I really like the program, but it takes soooo long for my dd to finish the lessons. I'm afraid that if I continue to use CLE, I won't have time to do Beyond. I feel like my dd needs the repetition in CLE. It is the first program I have seen my dd succeed at, but after Reading, LA and Math, she is finished for the day mentally. Her concentration is gone!

When does HOD teach things like suffixes and prefixes, syllabication, root words, tenses and contractions? The spelling looks very easy in the manual compare to what CLE 1 is having her spell. My dd reads very "average". The reading program in CLE 1 challenges her. I'm not worried about grammar instruction, what I am worried about is working with words. Is this taught in Bigger? Is it taught at all in HOD?

If I completed CLE 1 Reading and LA do I need to do Bigger instead of Beyond? My daughter will turn 7 in October and according to the age range, Beyond is where she should be placed. I don't want it to be too hard.

Hi Tabrett, and welcome to the HOD Board! :D Push the fears aside, because HOD has all of those things you listed (and much more  ). In regard to your questions about the LA skills you mentioned, R & S English is a unique English program, as it teaches grammar for the purpose of writing. So, all the skills you've mentioned are covered very well in a "working with words" sort of approach. I think you would LOVE HOD! :D It's such a balanced program, and it is time conscious as well. Beyond took us about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to do each day, and we enjoyed every bit of it. :D

We have done Beyond twice, and are on our second trip through Bigger. Both are excellent programs! If your dd placed in Beyond, I'd do Beyond with her. HOD teaches CM style skills for spelling, so with a 7 yo that is new to HOD, you'd probably want to do Spelling List 2 in Beyond, making sure to do all of the LA activities accompanying the words in the daily plans. Here's a link that explains the spelling:

If I were you, I'd do the 1 x a week grammar lesson in Beyond and call it good. :D But, if you are wanting daily grammar already for her, you could do R & S English 2, maybe half-speed and finish it during Bigger. R & S English is considered advanced a year, so you don't want to get to the upper levels too quickly. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you may have, and am looking forward to getting to know you here! :)

In Christ,
Julie

Suffixes and prefixes, syllabication, root words, tenses and contractions are PHONICS instruction. CLE LA 1 is phonics only. We used it for 8 light units and then switched to R&S Phonics/Reading. We like it so much better. My son is reading really well, but I am still doing phonics with him because I feel that a strong foundation in phonics is KEY to reading and spelling as they get older. We will be doing Beyond next year with the R&S Phonics/Reading (since he already did the emerging readers), but I have decided to hold off on English 2 until we get to Bigger. I think the HOD/CM way is so valuable. While he is getting that last bit of phonics training in, he is being gently led in Beyond to start English 2 byt the time we hit Bigger and have finished phonics. I LOVE it! :) (And my degree is in English, so I get pretty excited about this stuff! LOL)

I'm doing the LA prortion of CLE 1along with their phonics. CLE phonics is incorporated into thier LA in 2nd grade. I just looked at the R&S grade 2 phonics workbook. They look exactly like what I want! I'm just not ready to drop phonics instruction. I am also having my daughter read the R&S 1 readers (with no workbook) along with CLE this year. I planned on having her read R&S 2 readers next year (with no workbook). I was just worried about trying to do CLE 2 along with HOD's LA, but I think I can add just R&S Phonics wbs without it being an overload! That way I can do the emerging readers set also! OK now I'm excited! Do you suggest the TM with R&S phonics wbs?
