Question about Art & Music

I was reading Charlotte Mason Companion Saturday night, it makes SO much more sense to me now that we have been doing HOD for almost a year

Anyway, I was reading about teaching Art appreciation and classical music. Is this pretty much an "add-on" in HOD or does one of the higher units have something like that included? I know very little about art but would like to learn with my kids.

I too was wondering if these were included somehow in the higher grades. I didn't necessarily think so from the website and catalog, but didn't know for sure. Love any info on this as well.

There is art appreciation scheduled in Rome to Reformation. It uses a book called "Looking at Pictures"

All the guides include history activities which can be used for art, but it is not until CTC that extra art is added (Watercolor is used along w/poetry and in RTR "Looking at Pictures"). Music is usually in the form of scripture memorization (except for Bigger which has hymns) and a book on Music History (Preparing - Opal Wheeler's Mozart; CTC - The Accidental Voyage & RTR - Mr. Pipes and the Hymns of the Reformation).
If you want a more formal study of art and music theory then you would need to add that in. Starting with the Preparing Guide, there only 4 days scheduled, so you will have the 5th free to add those subjects in. HTH

Misty,
The ladies have done a great job of answering your question.

We tentatively plan to include a composer study and a hymn study of some sort in our future guides. As already mentioned, the RTR guide will have an art appreciation segment using Looking at Pictures. This is intended to help kiddos know how to appreciate art and what to look for within a painting. There will also be notebooking pages within RTR, including miniature reproductions within the notebooking pages of some of the works of the artists that we read about within RTR. This will help kiddos get to know the works of some of the Renaissance artists and get a feel for their more famous works of art.
If you search under art appreciation, picture study, music appreciation, or nature walks, quite a few past threads will come up on the board. This is a CM topic that has been discussed pretty often, and so the past threads are really helpful if you get a chance to search. The threads are full of ideas moms can use as extras if desired.
Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks Carrie! A hymn study sounds wonderful!

I'll be checking through the archives for ideas for possibly next year..... We are hoping to be able to get a piano and start lessons for them too
