Teaching Phonics

Post by shaffer96 » Fri Mar 12, 2010 9:48 pm

What curriculum do you all like for teaching phonics? There are so many options out there! I have been looking into The Reading Lesson and also Mcruffy Phonics. Any thoughts on either of these programs? My daughter is 41/2 and is so ready to start reading. I want to find a great program that is fun as well as solid! She is not really fond of worksheets, although she will do them. She does like to play phonics games and do hands on activities and she loves music! I used to teach reading, so I think I am driving myself crazy trying to find THE best program!
DD 8 - BHFHG

We started TRL with ds at 4.5, and it's been great for us - ds is almost finished with it. It doesn't have any writing involved, which was what ds needed, so we could start writing at a different pace. It's very simple...just open the book and read the pages together, and you can do as many or few pages per lesson as your dc is ready for (very nice for short attention spans :) Cute pictures and short stories keep ds interested...I tried Spell to Write and Read and All About Spelling beforehand. SWR was too involved and intense for me, and while AAS was interesting to ds and effective, ( I also used to teach in ps and really liked the reasoning behind how AAS was set up) I found it to be more involved than I wanted, and ds did not seem to need to learn *every* rule, unlike the LD kids I used to work with... HTH :D
