Good morning. I know this question has probably been asked before, and I do think I've read a thread or two about it.
How would you suggest or how do you document for high school credit/hours/gpa using the Charlotte Mason/HOD approach.
Currently we plan to do an extra year of 7th and possible 2 years of 8th grade, extending Kasey's middle school years to give her extra time to master reading comphrension, nail down her math, and be able to do as much of the HOD program as possible before moving on to 9th grade. By law in SC she has until she is 21 to earn a highschool diploma. As of this moment she is 13 yrs old. By law I must teach all the core including literature and comprehension (which with HOD is beautifully covered with ease) beginning in the 7th grade. Upon graduating from homeschooling/highschool, our hope is to be able to send Kasey to the local technical college where she can pursue a Vet Tech degree. By going to the technical college we would not have to do SAT or ACT, she simply take the college's entrance exam. We are hoping by through the slowing down of her middle/jr high years, when the time comes for 10th/11th she might also be able to attempt the college's entrance exam and possibly look at dual credits.
Please let take a moment to make sure I do clarify myself. I have sat and talked with Kasey. She understands to an extent the reasoning for "holding her" for at least another 3 years at the middle/jr high years. Working with animals has been a desire ever since she discovered Animal Planet at 2 years old. Her Daddy and I are both encouraging her to enter the vet tech field for many reasons.
1. We are playing to her weaknessess and strengths.
2. Our vet's office wants her to be part of the shadow program on a routine basis
3. Tech college would be a shorter track/time in college (thinking money here too)
4. she can focus on a degree that would put her in the workforce and open up opportunities to at a later date go back to college and work for other degrees that would complement vet tech
5. if she is satisified with vet teching, then she wouldn't have to be caught up in the work load of a traditional/classical university.
6. vet tech would be very very beneficail to any job she wants working with animals.
Yet again, it comes back to how do I document for highschool credit/hours/gpa using the Charlotte Mason/HOD approach and ensuring her readiness for that type of course load.

Most states will not allow you to count work that was completed in middle school toward high school credit. Some states will have an exception only in the area of math.
So, if that is the case, then you will need to determine at what point you will begin counting high school credit for Kasey as that will be when you need to begin keeping a transcript for her. Once you have listed Kasey as a high school student for state recording purposes, you can begin keeping track of her hours for high school credit. The guidelines I've listed above for credit hours will help you determine when to award a full credit and when to award a half credit or a quarter credit.
Programs differ as to how hours are earned to award credit. For example, some programs will do a portion of the geography credit each year, awarding a quarter credit for the 4 years of high school, until the full credit is earned by graduation. On the other hand, some programs (like our planned gegraphy guide) will do geography in one year and earn the full credit within that year. Either way is fine, as long as the required credit is earned.
HOD will be fairly straight-forward for counting credit, with mainly the left side of the guide counting as history or geography credit and the right side covering the requirements in the other areas. Our guides will be easy to count needed hours as the plans are all written out for the year and follow a cycle of daily activities and weekly activities in similar time allotments each week.
