Organizing HOD Work w/Workboxes

Post by pamh » Thu Feb 25, 2010 11:10 pm

I read a lot of posts on a homeschool website where the women use, Sue Patricks, Workbox System to organize their homeschool. Do any of you ladies use it to organize your kids HOD work? Sue Patrick is coming to a town this Saturday, 2 hours away from me (beautiful town, so well worth the drive) to put on a conference but I didn't know if it was worth attending when it comes to using it with HOD.

NOTE: I'm not sure since workboxes aren't HOD related if I could post this here, so I'm taking a chance. If not, please alert Carrie so this post can be deleted as I don't want to post something I'm not. I once asked if anyone had links to find some crafts for kids and I felt like some slammed me on this for asking because it was not aloud, which was very discouraging (I wear my feelings on my sleeve). Again, if I'm suppose to ask about another product, please just delete my post. Thanks in advance!

I don't personally use workboxes, but I know I have seen it discussed before. Someone who used to post here a lot was using workboxes; I believe she posted in the week-in-review section sometimes, because I remember seeing pictures of how she had things set up. I think it's okay for you to discuss those here; I think the concensus is-- they aren't necessary in order to use HOD effectively, BUT, if you want to use them and talk about them, that's fine!

We are using LHFHG and use workboxes. Workboxes are not necessary because HOD is laid out so well, but we were already using them and my son likes seeing how much work he has left each day. It also helps me because I get everything ready the day before so I am never caught off guard at the last minute without something we need for a craft. I basically have one workbox for each box in the teacher's guide. I put any books he needs for that box, pencil, crayons, craft supplies, etc depending on what activity it is. I usually have a few extra boxes also that I use for fun stuff like games, puzzles, library books, etc. Here's a link to a post on my blog from when we first started using workboxes that has pictures of our set up.

Oh thank you ladies for your input. The workbox conference is in a beautiful danish town called, Solvang (here in California) and any excuse to visit that town is a bonus! I really appreciate you both taking the time to post a reply!

We do workboxes with HOD! I agree that they are not necessary to do HOD successfully, but they have helped my DS to see how much he has left for the day and also given him the opportunity to be a little bit more independent. He also loves having two "fun" boxes (we do 12) each day. I purchased and read the workbox book and while it was great, I definitely pared down what she does. I just don't have the time, means, or talent to make all the file folder games and poster centers that she recommends. I think it would be worth it to go to the workshop, but just don't feel pressured to do all the "extras" in order to make workboxes work for you. I can give you more examples about what we do if you want to PM me -- just let me know! :D
