Should I get the Economy, Basic AND the extension, or will the Economy and Extension be enough? I am thinking they aren't meant to do all three? Or if I don't get the Basic will he miss out on some really good activities? The program looks so good and I am excited to see it! (I know the Basic is meant to be read aloud time, but because of other responsibilities I don't have the time to be able to do this)

Well, I'm sure there's a better answer, but since I'm here I will try to use my experience with Preparing with older children to answer this one
!
The Economy is your History. Your child will go to the guide & it will tell them what to read in what selected History book and they read it. The Basic is your read-alouds that are just great stories that tie in with their History and allow us parents to still be involved in what our increasingly independent children are learning. The Extension package is for strong reader - 7th or 8th grader who are not struggling through any of the other aspects of their daily learning. The ones who need just a bit more.
Our family plans to use RTR next year. My 8th grader will do RTR with extensions. My 7th grader will start RTR without extensions, but he is just one of those kids who works hard and gets it all right away so we may add those extension books or just an extension book here and there. I will also keep this in mind for my 8th grader who is a distracted learner..... If he's struggling to get it all done - the extension books will be the first thing I pull from his schedule.
It's been a real joy to see my children grow and learn through the gentle CM and Christ-Centered way that HOD has laid out for us and we excitedly look forward to RTR. I hope my explanation is help.

Pamela,
I'm sorry it's taken me a bit to get back to you. Juliekay did a great job of helping you!
If you don't have time to read aloud the Basic Package, then you would omit that. However in that case you'd want to be sure to do the Extension Package and make sure you are doing a reading program like Drawn into the Heart of Reading for those skills.
Blessings,
Carrie
