Okay, I just ordered DITHOR for my 2 older children, so I have not used it yet. However, my understanding is that once your child(ren) are independent readers, then you may begin using DITHOR as their reading program. It is set up with 9 different genres; see the suggested books on the HOD web site. Each grade level may read any book on their level, as long as they are studying the same genre? I think that's right. So, if you're doing Biography, a 2nd grade student may read a book about Helen Keller while the 6th grade student could read about Mozart. They will learn about different people, but still learn all they need to about a Biography? Hope that's clear. I'm sure others who have used this program and understand it better will be able to comunicate much more easily than I have here!

Hi Hugs,
I been using Drawn into the heart of reading with my kid for 2 years now
2ND and 3rd grades.
Yes you buy it separate, You get the big green book and it contains 2-8th grade lesson plans in it. Also you should get the work book for your student's level (reproducible for your family).
Those 2 items and books from library or your home book shelf or Carrie has some wonderful choices for sale in the web site.
The beautly of this system is that you follow along Carries age appropriate lesson plan for each day. Yesterday My dd drew pictures of the different settings used in the book, and answered questions.
Today we read about Noah and talked about Faith and perserverance. Then she read her book and we compared and contrasted. a character from the book with Noah (how did he/she show faith ect..)
The other day we talked about the problem in the book ect.. Its not the standard "who what where" , but mood, settings, character, Gods view on life.
Some days she give's you very little to do (I've only use it for 2-3 grade)
And lets you use that time for extra phonics practice or vocabulary.
The lessons takes 30-40 min if you have a really good time.
Its been very age appropriate and I can see my DD thinking about stuff she never would have if we hadn't use the guide. It also opens up oppertunities to use regular books to show how God works in all things.
So if ur little guy is 4th grade it would work for you. I like the fact that i can buy the one book and use it for 7 grades only replacing the work book each year.

Drawn into the Heart of Reading should be used when your child is an independent reader, beyond the level of books in this list:
http://www.heartofdakota.com/emerging-reader.php
I started my 4th grader with level 2/3 of Drawn Into the Heart of Reading, because she is not a big fan of reading, and is just on level. It has been a nice intro for her. If your 4th grader is an excellent, avid reader, he might be able to handle level 4/5 just fine.
By the way, level 2/3 of Drawn Into.. is scheduled daily in the lesson plans for Beyond Little Hearts and Bigger Hearts. Hope that helps!
