Bigger Extensions....is this ok?

I am using the extension package with my ds 9. He loves to read and is an advanced reader. I have been assigning the extra activities with the extensions. However it is a challenge to remember to check them daily. I was wondering if it is ok to just let him read the books as assigned and just orally narrate? Thanks for input

Yes, it would be totally fine to just assign the reading for the extension pack. :D If he is doing all of the rest of the plans in BHFHG, that will be enough, and he can just read the extension pack books. Your ds is right on the bubble being age 9, but usually the extension package is for 10-11 yo's, so he's already doing extra just by reading them. So, just have him enjoy them without the assignments, and then you can just enjoy focusing on the BHFHG core plans too! :D

In Christ,
Julie

Michelle,

I completely agree that for a 9 year old the Extension Pack is an extra and likely the additional assignments to go with the extension readings would be too much for a 9 year old. Orally narrating after the readings would be a perfect assignment for his age. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Happy to read this, as this is what we've been doing with dd 9. I've been feeling a little guilty for not having her do the assignments to go with the Bigger extension books, and now my guilt is gone :D

Hi Michelle,

I was reading this post and noticed in your signature that you are using Bigger with a 7yr. old. Could I ask you how that is going? I am considering a similar combination next year. My 6 yr. old is currently doing Beyond and having no trouble with it. I wonder how the reading would be for her in Bigger next year?

Thanks,
Shannon

Shannon,
He has done good. The readings are fine for him. However I have decided to slow him down to half pace. Not because Bigger is too hard. I have combined him with his older brother. Which I have alwyas done. However I realized I should have gone half speed with my 7 year old to begin with. My older son could have just kept going. I spilt them for a few reasons. I felt it was time. My 7 year old needs more time to improve his handwriting before we get to Preparing. He also lets older brother do all the talking. I want him to be more responsible for answering on his own. My older son is mature and very independent for his age, first born. 7 year old likes to have me right next to him through out all his school. I have noticed him becoming more independent lately. This is one of the reasons I wanted to slow him down in Bigger. I sure hope my rambling has helped you with your questions. Bigger is a great book. We have loved it.
