I want to teach my son more about hymns and the history behind them. I think this is done in an earlier guide, but since this is our first year with HOD, we missed it. I know Accidental Voyage is scheduled next year in CTC, but I was wondering if anyone has read the other Mr. Pipes books and would they recommend them. I was thinking of doing these as a read aloud at night so the entire family could participate.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the books you mentioned, but the book used with HOD in the Bigger program is "Hymns for a Kid's Heart" by
Joni Eareckson Tada and Bobbie Wolgemuth. It's great. It comes with a CD of the hymns. The book includes a story about the background of the hymn writer and a short devotional. You could order it separately right off the HOD site. I hope someone chimes in with info. about the Mr. Pipe books. They sound interesting.

Lynn,

We are also using Mr. Pipes and the Hymns of the Reformation as a read-aloud in RTR and will likely be using the British one within one of the next guides, as Douglas Bond tells a great story! :D There will probably be a hymn study of some sort in one of the last two guides as well. :D

You could easily use Hymns for a Kid's Heart Vol. I, as it was used in Bigger Hearts. We did it by singing a hymn with the CD, adding a verse or two a week until the hymn was learned. Our family sang it together right before we ate lunch each day. The book also includes a devotional and a bit of background as to how the hymn came to be written. These are wonderful for making the hymns a part of your kiddo's day. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
