Okay, here's my situation:
My dd will be 8 in March, and ds just turned 6. They are almost at the same reading level, and dd is just a bit ahead in Math. I've always done read alouds together, and dd is doing spelling & copywork, where ds hasn't. His writing is not as near as good as hers, and he gets bored with copywork, plus his attention span isn't quite as good as hers. (understandably, given his age)
Anyway, when I've tried to do a lot of combining in the past, dd can get kind of nasty. I know it's a sibling rivalry kind of thing. That's why I want to do the math, LA and copywork separate. But, I really want to use BLHFHG with them both for for bible, history, and reading aloud. I know he's on the young side, but ability wise, he's totally able to do BLHFHG. I don't want to have to do LHFHG just because dd feels like they should be in "separate" grades.
Anyone else have this issue?
(BTW, they get along very well for the most part, but with school, I think dd feels threatened, or that she has to be the best)
Thanks!

Re: Another combining question-sorry!
i have just decided that i probably won't combine my kids. i wanted to combine for the same reasons. But i see my son (turned 6 in October) always comparing himself to his sister (turns 5 in March). He is advanced in math and reading. i have no problems keeping them separate for that part and that part is so flexible it doesn't matter what guide you are in. so in the long run i see them in separate guides unless something changes. i will be doing science together since we do our own thing for that and they seem to do fine together for it.
i think you will just have to decide in the long run if it is better to keep them together or not. My kids get along realy well and the younger sometimes doesn't know what to do without big brother:).

Well, with those ages the wonderful news is that you truly could combine or not combine with HOD. How great to have options, hmmm?
Thought that does mean it takes a bit of weighing each option to see which would really be the best plan for you and your dc. It's an entire year of your life with homeschooling, so I truly want to take some time to sort through this with you. Have you taken a look at the placement chart and placed them separately just to see which program would really fit each of them the best if they were in separate programs? Here's a link to that:

We do separate HOD programs and enjoy that very much, but many other ladies combine with HOD and enjoy that very much. Because there is some sibling rivalry going on there, I do think it is worth looking at the pros and cons of both combining and not combining for your dc. You may find it is actually easier to do them separately. However, if you really do have your heart on combining them, I do think that is very doable. I'll check back and read anything else you have to share in light of the placement chart, etc. and try to give you the best advice for you personally after that.

Julie

Julie:
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me with this!
I did check the placement info, and my ds really does place in Beyond. Dd could probably do either Beyond or Bigger, but because she needs more math instruction, and we haven't done a lot of copywork or narration, I would feel better having her do Beyond first.
It's hard, because I don't want to hold ds back, but dd is really sensitive to things. I'll just have to figure it out somehow.

If you decide to combine you will still probably want to buy the Bigger guide for your dd's dictation, math and language arts. Maybe if she sees that she is working out of a different guide her attitude may be better. She may also be ready for DITHOR for reading, which would be another way to seperate your children's learning but still be able to do about half your school day together. HTH

I really like funkmama's idea of having dd do the right side of Bigger Hearts and ds do right side of Beyond, but combine them for the left side of Beyond!
I think that would be a great way to show your dd you need this other guide for her upper level skills because she needs something harder, and yet also combine them for core subjects in Beyond. It may help to tell her that you have found a message board where literally tens of hundreds of families are doing just this very thing with their dc exactly the ages of your dc!
Combining them for the left side of Beyond for those subjects will be a great way for you to begin with HOD too. You'd end up doing harder 3 R's for her anyway, so doing Bigger Hearts right side is a super easy way to fill that need.
One more additional benefit would be that if you get going with Beyond and think dd needs more, you'll already own the Bigger Hearts guide and can always just order the other things you'd need at that point to just do Bigger Hearts with her instead, and then your ds could do Beyond Little Hearts half-speed.

Julie
