Hello, I have been using PHFHG with the extension package for my 10yr. old ds. We both love it. He is excelling and is an excellent reader. I will now be bringing home my other ds, age 10, from public school fourth grade but he is testing in second grade level in reading comprehension. My question: I have not yet purchased DITHOR. What level do I purchase?? Should I purchase the 2/3 or the 4/5 level or both?? Will my struggling 10yr. old be too challenged in 4/5? Will my advanced 10 yr. old not be challenged enough in 2/3? Will they need separate levels or will it be enough to give them different levels of books to read?? Any insight would be helpful. Praying for God's wisdom before I order.
Thanks!

Re: DITHOR with struggling reader
The beauty of DITHOR (teachers guide) is you can give one book to your eldest and a different book to your youngest they just need to be the same genre. When you start you can do the main part together. Since the questions are created that way. Then you take your struggling aside and do the 2/3 part. Then do the 4/5 part with your other ds. It is designed to work that way
you will need a student book (consumable) for each lvl.
My other thought is don't do DITHOR yet with your struggling reader but instead for the rest of the year set him on a course of grade lvl books that are easy to read (not challenging but on his lvl) as his reading portion of school. And maybe do a review of Phonics to make sure he's not missing anything he needs to know to thrive. The on lvl books are to build strength in sight reading and confidence.
In addition have him listen to books/stories on tape/mp3 for 15- 20 min (library internet) a day, to strengthen his comprehension.
My 10 year old has had great improvement in comprehension with audio stories as part of her daily routine. (up one grade lvl in 4 months) Also you might get colored overlays and a slanted surface (set book on a 2" 3 ring binder) to help him focus. I just found out a slanted surface reduces eye strain.
hope that helps..

Re: DITHOR with struggling reader
Thanks for the thoughts. He is already reading on level aloud to me, perfect pronunciation - so pretty sure it is not a phonics thing. Really, just can't answer basic comprehension questions after reading, whether aloud or to himself. He was just tested at a reading center, & they are in agreement with the school. I have worked one on one with him, have him reading books 1/2 hour every day. The only thing he doesn't do is listen to books on audio. Maybe I will begin that before adding anything else.
Thanks for the help.

Re: DITHOR with struggling reader
Welcome to the HOD Board, 4Hispraise!
I'm so glad you are enjoying PHFHG - we did it last year and enjoyed it so much too. You must be excited to bring home your other ds too. I think you will find DITHOR can really foster the love of reading. I used it in a tutoring situation for many years before using it with my own dc, and it has worked well for all. I would place your 10 yo coming home in Level 2/3. There are book packs available too, which I've enjoyed as I like HOD's book choices. Here is a link to the Level 2 book pack:

If the titles in that package look too difficult, there is a Sample Book Ideas list that gives a LOT of book choices for each level and genre (it is part of each package):

For your other 10 yo, you could do either Level 2/3 or 4/5. If there is going to be a lot of heartache about them doing different Student Books due to comparison, you could have him do Level 2/3 for a year and just pick more challenging books for him. If that is not an issue, I'd place him in Level 4/5. Here is a link to the book packs for 4/5:

We've really enjoyed the Boy Interest Book Pack here at our house with my ds. You can easily choose your own books too though, if you'd rather. DITHOR is just a joy to teach, and I am so glad both of your dc will get to do it!
In Christ,
Julie
