Another Combining Question

Hello All,

I have 2 daughters, the youngest turned 6 at the end of November and the other is 7 but will be 8 at the end of April.
My 7 year old is not finished with her phonics but should be by the traditional end of this school year around May. Reading has been a bit of a struggle for her.
My younger daughter is just starting phonics (officially) but can decode fairly well already. She learned the letter sound easily and took off on decoding with very little difficulty.
I would like to combine the girls in LHFHG but was wondering if it would be challenging enough in the other subject areas for a 7 soon to be 8 year old. We will be starting HOD after Christmas break and continuing into next school year. So we would have around 20 weeks of LHFHG left to finish at the start of next fall.

I have read through the selection and placement charts and it appears that I could go either way. I guess I am looking for anything I may have overlooked in placing a child already at the top of the suggested placement age for LHGHG in this program knowing that I will be stretching it into the next school year.
My gut tells me to combine; what do you more experienced with HOD think?

Thank you for your help!
Kathy

I know you will get more answers from folks with more experience in placement issues, but I just wanted to mention that LHFHG has a great list of optional books to add (in the appendix). If you were doing LHFHG as your only program and wanted to beef it up a little for your older dd, you would certainly have time to add in some of these.

I think that would work. You could add in the appendix and also some additional science for the older one, as well as math and phonics on each girl's level, of course. From what I can tell, and also from my experience, it is easier to adjust to making something more challenging, then to make one of the more challenging programs easier. So if you're wanting to combine, which it sounds like would work well for you, then I think LHFHG sounds perfect.

Hi Kathy, and welcome to the HOD Board! :D I think your dc are definitely close enough in age and in skill level to combine, so you have several good options to choose from here. You could do LHFHG with the K options or the 1st. grade options. Or, you could have the two of them do the left side of LHFHG, have your younger child do the right side of LHFHG, and have your older child do the right side of Beyond. Either of these options would be great! So, I'd just base it on your overall feelings of which would work better for your family. LHFHG is so much fun to do! You and your dc are going to love it. We all look forward to getting to know you better here! :D

In Christ,
Julie

Thank you all for your help! I am looking forward to doing HOD.
I am going to get the books out and see what it would look like mixing them like Julie suggested.
I hadn't thought of that.
Thank you so much for your quick replies. I'm sure I will be back with more questions.
Blessings,
Kathy
