Extensions in Preparing and DITHOR

All,
I am going to have my 10 year old start the extensions in Preparing in Unit 17. The first book is The Bronze Bow. What genre would this be considered for DITHOR? I am wondering if all the extensions are historical fiction? I am trying to kill two birds with one stone in using the extensions and DITHOR together. I searched the bookstore on HOD website, but couldn't find where the titles in the extension package would be categorized for DITHOR. Any help is appreciated.

Brenda,

I'd categorize The Bronze Bow as historical fiction. Aesop's Fables would work for folk tales. Uncovering the Mysterious Woolly Mammoth would work for nonfiction. Louis Pasteur and Who Was Marco Polo? would work for biography. Journey to America would work for adventure. You could decide how to categorize the rest - often books fit in more than one genre - though I think that would be enough genres to get you through the last half of the year.

Any book will work with DITHOR, and these are excellent books, so they will work just fine. I'm just wondering if you'd be doing the extension activities suggested as well? I think that may be overkill if a child did both DITHOR and the extension activities with the same book. With your child being 10, the target age ranges for PHFHG are ages 8-10, so you could weigh if you want your child to do the extension activities or not. HTH! We enjoyed doing PHFHG so much last year. In fact, we still have our timeline up and refer to it as a nice overview of history. DITHOR has also been a blessing in our home. I now have 2 dc doing DITHOR, and it is great to see them loving reading so much. :D I think you'll find the same to be true in your home! :D

Julie

Julie,
Thank you so much for your reply - it was very helpful! I am planning to not do the extension activities with the books, but I want her to read the books and use them with DITHOR. From your post, I gather that will work? We are enjoying our Preparing year very much, I just feel like she needs a bit more. I can't wait to have her in CTC next year!

Yes, then I think that would work just fine! I'm so glad you are enjoying PHFHG. We are enjoying CTC this year too, so you have that fun ahead of you as well. Have a great night!
