Boy, am I ever thrilled! Today, my son told me that he loves to write!! He told me that he was thankful that I didn't let him give up when he was convinced that he hated to write and would never be able to complete a writing assignment without tears & frustration!! Before we started HOD, my #1 fear was that he would never learn to write well and that he would always hate it. That fear had been a cloud over our homeschool for quite some time. I just didn't know what to do about it! The simplest of paragraphs were like torture! I always saved writing for last because I didn't want to start his days out with such misery. He made a little progress last year with imitative writing and I felt good about that, but I knew he was capable of much more than he was doing if I could only find an approach that we could stick with.
Now, we are only doing the writing in Preparing and he is just blossoming. He's getting more confident and excited everyday. He has decided he can write poetry. He has more than doubled the length of his paragraphs and his narrations are more interesting & complete. He is a HUGE perfectionist and that has hindered his progress in writing but lately he's getting very creative and he's not so afraid to just try and then edit it if he wants to.
Well, I just had to share. He is only 10 but he himself recognized that it was the change in curriculum that has helped him. He even told me he was glad that his little brother gets to do HOD for longer than he has been able to, so maybe things will come easier for him. He even said, "You know, we have used alot of good things in the past but HOD fits me the best."
