Back, with a question

Hello ladies! It's been quite a while since I've been on the boards....I've missed all of you. I'm really going to need to catch up!

I did not start the year with HOD, though we have done some more of Bigger...that we needed to finish. We just did not have the extra money at the time to buy what we wanted to get. However, I am planning to purchase what I need for PHFHG AND HFHTT in just a couple of weeks. We are actually moving again at the beginning of November, so I'll wait to place the order once we're there...back to Florida, at least temporarily.

Anyway, here is my question, in a round about way. My daughter is reading books from the Dolphin Adventures series and loves them. I am looking into purchasing books for her to read with DITHOR but I'm unsure which book pack to choose....level 2 or 3? She's technically in 4th grade and her reading is MUCH improved, but I know reading aloud will be more difficult so I don't want to have something that's too advanced. What do you think? I noticed one of the levels (2 I think) includes one of the Dolphin Adventures books.

I am also wondering about the read alouds for CTC. If I understand correctly, I can choose to read books aloud for history or have my son read the extension pack for history and skip the read alouds or choose to do both. Is that correct? I want to make sure when I place my order that I have everything I need to start as soon as we get it.

I'm looking forward to getting back into HOD...even though we'll be a little behind. But, I'm not gonna stress about it this year. It seems life causes us to be behind in some way every year so I'm just going with the flow this time. I can't wait to hear what you ladies have to say, and I am so thrilled to be back to catch up on all the 'news' from the boards!

Hi Wendy! It's good to hear from you - how's the little one doing? I'm excited for you to get your PHFHG and CTC things. We are doing CTC (and Beyond, and LHTH) and enjoying it so very much! I think you will too. As far as your question about DITHOR, I guess I'd go with whichever pack overall seems to fit her the best. If you are following the PHFHG plans, it schedules DITHOR 3 days a week, meaning you'd only get through 1/2 of the genres this year. Then, the next year you'd do the other 1/2 of them. Or, if you are going to do DITHOR 5 days a week instead, then you would get through an entire book pack this year. That may make a difference in your decision. The reading levels for Book Pack 2 are from a 3.0 to 4.1 (third grade to fourth grade/first month) reading level. The reading levels for Book Pack 3 are from a 3.5 to 5.1 (third grade/fifth month to fifth grade/first month) reading level. When first beginning DITHOR, I would rather the books were a bit easier than a bit harder, since there are new skills being taught and that makes it challenging enough to start with. :D

We chose to do the Basic Package Option 1: History Interest Set for the Storytime box read alouds and are really enjoying them. But, you can choose the girl or boy read alouds otherwise (we tried to get most of these titles for our ds to read on his own at some point instead). All 3 of the read aloud packages have great books, so it's a tough choice. :D As far as your older dc, yes - in answer to your question here - you would either choose to read to them the Basic Package Option 1: History Interest Set for the Storytime box read alouds, OR have them independently read the Self-Study Extension Package for Older Students, OR have them do both. There are no bad choices here - so, I'd just do what works best for your overall day. :D

It will be great fun catching up with you!!! HTH, and I'm so glad to see you around here again! :)

In Christ,
Julie

Thanks so much for the reply, Julie. It seems I'm always second-guessing myself. I'll ponder on it all some more....I've got time as we'll be in transition mode for a few weeks.

Emma is doing great! She's 8 months old already...time has flown by. Now to get back into a 'groove' and some awesome books! :D

I'm so glad little Emma is doing well! I'm excited for you to get into the wonderful books ahead of you. You are not alone in second-guessing yourself - I second-guess myself all of the time. I'm trying to be more decisive as I age because it's something I have always struggled with - my dh and I are day and night about that. I figure somewhere between being totally decisive and being totally indecisive is probably the perfect person - but none of us are that person. :D I think you have a good plan ahead of you and will do just fine! Keep asking questions here though if there's something more to ponder. Carrie's on the board more now that she's past the health concerns in her family. I'm so glad you are back! :D

In Christ,
Julie
