I am wondering if families using BH with children old enough for DITHR are doing both the literature study in the guide as well as DITHR?

So far, I've been doing DITHR with dd and just using the girl storytime pack for evening read-alouds with no formal discussion or activities. I thought we might have character trait overload by trying to work on character traits in both DITHR and Storytime as well as Bible. I kind of thought we might all just feel discouraged and give up

Just wondering how others are doing this?

We did both, and we enjoyed that. The Storytime lessons don't take long, and I think they are very important to do because they teach some different skills than DITHOR does. Here are the academic goals of BHFHG's Storytime:

*Day 1: introduce and study different types of literature
*Day 2: model narration to foster comprehension
*Day 3: identify and analyze a different story element for each genre
*Day 4: relate personally to one Godly character trait, compare
Biblical and book characters, and make a bookmark as a
reminder of the trait
*Day 5: practice narration by retelling the story

While Day 1 and Day 3 overlap with DITHOR, Days 2, 4, and 5 cover more skills. This is a good question, as I think other ladies may be wondering the same thing. Thanks for asking it, and I hope this helps!

We did both, too. And, as we went along I could see that they were similar and yet different. The storytime box in Bigger's plans really had some fun ideas that we enjoyed. There was usually one "project" that you kept adding to during the genre.

During the year our genres matched up part of the time, and part of the time were different. I really preferred to have them be different, because then we weren't talking about the same character quality several times in the same week. But, we talked about them at different times in the year. Does that make sense? I usually let Grant pick his next DITHOR book out of the choices on the shelf, and then we went with that genre. But we followed the guide for Bigger and stayed with what was planned for storytime. So, we started with Fantasy for DITHOR and Biography for storytime.

Thanks for the helpful replies. It's good to know that the goals are different, and it sounds like they complement one another. I think we'll add the literature discussion as we begin the next book

I agree! We found it to be kind of a nice built-in review to do them at different times. Good suggestion, Kathleen! BTW - I hope you are surviving this busy season on the farm.
