When is grammar introduced?

Post by MistyP » Mon Oct 19, 2009 11:12 am

I was just wondering when HOD introduces grammar: nouns, verbs, etc.....

I have both LHFHG and Beyond and I am not seeing grammar in either one.

Thanks!

Grammar is introduced on Day 5 of each unit's plans in Beyond Little Hearts. We found it to be the perfect introduction to the parts of speech prior to beginning R & S 2 in Bigger Hearts. :D

Thanks Julie!

I originally started out going through the LA part of Beyond with DD #1 but decided to wait and do the poems next year so really I have just been using the spelling list in the back (DD #1 (1st) does List #2 and DD #2 (K) does List #1) and the reading schedule in the back.

I guess I some how missed the grammar on Day #5  Now I am wondering if I should start adding some of it in this year or just wait until next year when we are really doing Beyond. I kind of hate for DD #1 to not start that until 2nd grade.... I guess it can be more of a review next year if we do some of it this year....

We ended up doing the grammar portion of Beyond last year while we where doing LHFHG (1st grade). Then this year while doing Beyond, we have moved onto the Rod & Staff Book that is used in Bigger for 2nd grade. We've been taking it at a bit slower pace than what is called for in Bigger and doing most exercises orally, but it is working well for us.

Hi Misty! :D I can totally see why you'd want to save the poems for the next year, as that is a neat tie-in to what's being learned in history in Beyond. :) I wasn't sure if you are doing the LA plans for spelling or just doing the lists. I wanted to mention that as far as the spelling goes, I've found doing the LA box of plans with the words has really helped my dc with their spelling. It includes instruction about how to go about it CM style, has them use marker boards, use the words in context, write the words in context - so many great skills that helped my dc with copywork and dictation later on. I wouldn't want your little honeys to miss that. :D For the grammar, you could either wait or start now. If you are wanting to keep your 2 dc together on their grammar, than I think I'd wait, as R & S English could get to be too difficult for your youngest to hang with over time. If you wanted to separate them out for grammar, you could have your older start now with the Beyond lessons, and then next year just do the Beyond lessons with your younger and R & S 2 with your older. I think either would be fine to do. HTH! :D
