If so, how does that work out in the sequence of years? Should they eventually catch up to the same number of book as their grade level? Or, is it OK to always be a year "behind"?
Thanks!

By the time your student completes 7th grade, you will have completed 6A and 6B Singapore. Your child could easily take pre-algebra after this in 8th, possibly Algebra. That would line you up for Algebra in 9th. Our olders easily went from 5B to pre-algebra, so if that was your desire, you could even hit Algebra in 8th. All that to say, I think you will be fine (as long as that is where they placed). My third grader is doing 2B right now, and would probably be better in 2A (but we have already completed that, however not as easily as if we had waited). If I remember correctly, in Singapore 1A starts at about age 7, not what we necessarily think of as first grade here in the states.

My 3rd grader did 2A and 2B last year. That was where he placed, and I know that compared to the program we came from he was learning more than his peers still doing it at the 3rd grade level. So I wouldn't worry about it. I love math, and I feel very comfortable with where he's at and what he's learning this year doing 3A and 3B for 4th grade. So, I say don't worry about "catching up".

FYI public schools use 1a and 1b for second grade, so your child won't be behind. I think you will see that as you do the math, that you will most definitely not be behind. I've got my 1st grader doing 1a and 1b, it is quite a challenge for her, but she loves it so we'll continue soldiering through it and slow down if necessary. Homeschooling is all about meeting your child where they are at and moving them forwadr at the pace that is right for them; most likely that pace will be different for different subjects,I wouldn't worry about where your child is only where they are going.

We did 1A/1B for second grade too, and are still on that path quite happily (doing 3A/3B for fourth grade). Singapore is well-known to be typically considered a year advanced anyway. I taught third grade for many years, and the math we did in Singapore 2A/2B homeschooling my ds in third grade had higher level thinking than the "enrichment" portion of the math curriculum we chose for our third grade ps students (and I flew to D.C. to help choose that math curriculum for our school district
). I definitely think you are just fine doing 1A/1B for second grade.
8Arrows had an awesome breakdown of a good plan for the years to come too - great question, Terri!
