King of the Wind

Post by holyhart » Tue Oct 06, 2009 1:46 pm

Has anyone read this? We are getting ready to start our adventure genre and I was thinking that Evelyn would enjoy this one since she LOVES horses. But I just read that it has the warning "not for sensitive readers". What does that mean? Not sure if I should choose a different book....

Kelly,

I haven't read it. But, I think I remember someone here saying that either the boy or the horse is treated cruelly in the book...maybe at the beginning? I'm totally trying to go off distant memory here though. Have you tried searching for the book title? I'm sure that it has been talked about here somewhere because that's where I'm getting my sketchy memory from.

I'm sure that it will be a great book for Evelyn with her love of horses! (Whether you go for it now or in the future.)

We read it last year, and my ds loved it! I didn't think he would take as much from the book because it is a "harder" read, but he surprised me. There is a couple of instances when the horse is abused, but my ds (who can be very sensitive to things) was fine. It is a great book.

Thanks ladies. We started it this afternoon and Evelyn actually squealled when she saw the book! She is just too funny! So far she liked it, but then again the "real" story hasn't even begun. I think she will probably be fine.

My dd is a horse fanatic, so she was excited to start King of the Wind. It is a good read. We are over halfway through it and so far it has been great. The horse is treated cruelly by one of the owners so far, but it was a good opportunity to reiterate how we need to respect God's creation since God created all creatures and has given man domain. Also, there were some issues I had in the beginning with it being placed in Morocco under Islam in the beginning, but it was a good opportunity to explain a bit of that false religion to my ds. She quickly was able to discern that the mother died (oops, hope I'm not giving anything away) because of the false religious teachings rather than the colt being bad luck as was stated. They made the horses in the royal stable participate in Ramadan, even the pregnant ones.

Hope you enjoy it!

This is an all-time favorite of my ds Wyatt. I read it to him for Storytime first, but since then he's reread it at least a handful of times. It's been years since we read it, but the horse was treated cruelly at the beginning, there is some kind of good luck/bad luck beliefs that we also talked about how we believe God is 100 % in control of everything, and there is a trip on a boat where there is some hardship (possible starvation), etc. It is just a fantastic read. It sparked my ds's love for Marguerite Henry as an author, and we have now collected virtually all of her horse books (which Wyatt has read from cover to cover many times). I think Evelyn will continue to love King of the Wind!
