We are looking at HOD for next year and I'm wondering if you feel the science part of HOD seems like enough or do you supplement? I really enjoy science so I guess that factors into the big picture. Thanks for any opinions and advice you can share

I have done and am doing both. But one thing the science in HOD is very good. It get's them thinking well, scientifically. Makes them think about the why of it all and what is it they are really observing. My suggestion would be to try it as is because you are going to be surprised at how full it is. My kids that are on target age wise with the program do HOD as written and then I have increased the level of science for my older child. I will say that I am a science nut and I have things on my shelf that I get inspired to throw in from time to time when things connect. But it is great to have that freedom to do that if you want and at the same time to not really have to do that as well. But the program itself is enough in my opinion as long as you have your kids in target age wise and level wise. We have loved HOD science. There are programs that shove a bunch of facts in their head and do not teach them how to think. HOD science is more of a thinking science and I find that much harder to find in the elementary years. We love science. I honestly can't imagine doing any MORE science. It's scheduled for every day in HOD. Now my children have a tendency to take the science further with their own observations and extra-curricular reading but I'd hate to over-schedule science & not leave them room to do that. Part of why we love science is because so much of it is self-exploratory. HOD gives my children a wonderful rich framework of reading, experiments, and notebooking while still leaving them time to build their own bird observation blind in the backyard so they can track every bird that comes to the feeder, kwim?

I wanted to pop in and welcome you, too. Daisy and water2wine already did a great job of giving you a snapshot of HOD's science. It's one of my ds's FAVORITE things in our day! Now, with Grant, we started HOD with Bigger last year. It has science every day. And, I know that isn't the case in the younger guides. I would go with water2wine's suggestion and give it a try as is. Then if you decide you and your kids want more you can always add it in. (It looks like your hands are full , and I'm quite sure HOD's time-consious plans are going to be a blessing to you. And, if I were you, I'm quite sure that I'd do it as is.) Only you will know God's best for your family though.

Thank you Kathleen, Daisy, and water2wine for your input! I think we'll try it as is and go from there. We will be doing Nature Study on Fridays too so that will help fulfill my love for the study of God's creations Thanks for the warm welcome!

We are doing Beyond, but decided to add Sonlight General Science 2 to the program (2 days a week). My kids just LOVE science, so I feel they NEED and ENJOY more. But I believe you said you are doing Nature Study on Friday, so that in and of itself may be the only addition you feel necessary.
