I just realized that we would need clay today. I did not do a good job of planning ahead. Oh well! I saw on another thread that many of you used modeling clay from Walmart. Was if the Crayola brand? Walmart is just 5 minutes away, thought I'd pop over there and pick some up. Can you also tell me approximately what the price was for the clay? Thanks!

Actually, we made our own. We ended up using differnet recipes that I found online, but if you look ahead you will find a recipe in week 5 that you can use. We used a $1 plastic clear shoe box bin and kept the lid on it and it kept it plenty moist to work with all week. No need to buy! Just use the salt, flour and water recipe that you will use again next week!

I bought some soft modeling clay at Walmart. It was a pack of individually wrapped colors called Model Magic Modeling Clay by Crayola. It was around $5-$6. The individual packages are kind of little though. I'm not sure how much you need, but after you get past today's lesson, my favorite all-time clay to have on hand is by Miller Pads and Paper. This clay lasts forever, is inexpensive, has lots of color choices, comes in individually wrapped sticks, and is of a good consistency - it has to be worked a bit by the adult first to be moldable, but then works great.

This reply is probably a little too late, but we bought a little tub of modeling clay at Wal Mart.
It is made by Crayola, is in a yellow & green container (like a Cool Whip container) and says "Air-Dry Clay" on the top. It gave us plenty of clay for the project and we had enough left over to do other projects.

Would the Crayola tub of clay from Walmart be enough for 2 children to do that art project or would I need to buy two tubs of clay?

I would think there is enough clay in the tub to make 2 maps. I guess it depends how big you make it. We made our map 1/2 inch deep in a shoebox size plastic container with a lid and had plenty of clay leftover.

I bought both the Crayola Air Dry clay and the Model Magic in the individual packages just to compare and see what I liked better to use in the future.

The Crayola small tub seems plenty for both my dd and ds to both do the same projects. I bought it at Michael's with a 50% off coupon I found on the internet. (google search michael's coupons) I also remember that Hobby Lobby often has coupons too. So, I got the Crayola clay small tub for only $3.00.

I also bought the Model Magic at Michael's a different day with another coupon and then it was only about $2.00 a package.

The Crayola clay is like real clay, really messy! But, the kids loved that! (not mom so much ) A good deal if you don't want to make your own and it will last through several projects as well.

The Model Magic is not messy at all, but more expensive because you would need a package of it for every project. It also doesn't dry hard. We used it for the egyptian cartouche and it is paintable and worked well, but when it dries it is still flexible, but that's ok. The Crayola clay dries hard and my dd's cartouche broke and the paint soaked in FAST so we weren't able to wipe it off at all. However, if she had painted faster we probably could have.

So, that's all I got! Hope this helps anyone!
