questions about spelling, help please!

I need you all to help me decide about spelling. I think I know what to do, but trying this method is new to me. So, need some feedback

O.k., background first:
DS/8 years is doing all of Beyond except the lang. box and he is ready for Bigger's R&S book.
DS has always been a very good speller.
We did the first list of words in Bigger. I called out orally (to see which one to do list or dictation). He could spell all the words except the target (some call challenge) word "when". He wants to spell without the "h". I did move on the dictation and he did that fine, with the exception of spelling "call" with one "l" and not two.

So, I'm kind of confused about if we should do dictation or the lists or both???? I believe the challenge words (last two) will be the only problem if any. I also believe he can already spell many of the words in the list of Bigger. Spelling is a strong point, math is not, ha!

I would love your ideas! Thanks in advance!

I think I'd fast forward to around the middle of the spelling and see how he does. If he misses a few words, I'd start at the mid-point of the spelling lists or a bit before. If he breezes through it and doesn't miss any, I'd start at the beginning of dictation. I wouldn't start past the beginning of the dictation, because he already missed a spelling word and the first dictation sample, and they are to be mastered before moving on. HTH!
