Target Spelling Words

We've been working on the spelling lists in Beyond for a couple of weeks now. I was just wondering about the 2 target words at the end of each section. Are they just there to familiarize the kids with words that are commonly used that either have the same spelling but not the same sound sort of like the exception to the rule ( in the list below it would be work) or make the same sound but not the same spelling (in the list below it would be your)? Do they have a true purpose, or are they just common words kids need to know and they are placed as close to a pattern they fit as possible?
Such as this weeks words (unit 14) are:
or
for
fort
horn
(a few others then)
your*
work*
* are target words
(There is no problem that needs to be addressed because things are going well with the spelling words. This is just a curious mind that was trying to find out if there was a specific reason these words are chosen.)

I think of them like "bonus" words. They familiarize the kids with the words that do not "fit the rule, but I don't require them to be right for him to make 100% on his test for the week. HTH

We called them "challenge" words because they don't fit the spelling pattern we were studying.

Thanks. I'll remember to think of them as bonus or extra credit words.

Many of them are take from the Dolche word list, or are chosen because they are the most frequently used and/or most commonly misspelled words. We call them challenge words too. HTH!

Thanks Julie. I'm just inquisitive by nature, since I've looked all over the manual and couldn't find an answer, I was hoping there was a reason for choosing these words.

Crystal,
The ladies did a great job of answering your question.

They are correct that the spelling words found in our guides are on many lists of most commonly used and/or misspelled words. Our spelling lists do include those words to make sure kiddos have a good grounding in them prior to heading into dictation. These words would be considered foundational to writing.
The bonus or extra words are words that do not neatly fit the pattern and thus must be memorized instead. Think of them as sight words.
Blessings,
Carrie
