Dictation Question?

Post by learning6 » Thu Sep 24, 2009 7:22 pm

Can someone explain how to use dictation in PHFHG for spelling? I have a nine year old who is really struggling with what we are using and if using the dictation method is going to simplify the process for her then I would like to try it. I just am unfamiliar with it and was wondering if anyone could explain it. Thanks

Another HOD user can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe first of all you have your dd study the passage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. After she has done that, you dictate the passage phrase by phrase or sentence by sentence and have her write it down without looking. Then she takes what she wrote from your dictation and compares it against the original, word by word, checking the punctuation and capitalization as well. She circles any mistakes she made on her paper, I believe (maybe on the passage photocopied from the manual). If she did not make any mistakes she can move on to the next dictation passage. If there were mistakes she studies the same one the next time you are scheduled to do dictation, noting her mistakes so that she will not make the same ones again and then you dictate that passage to her. Then if she gets it all correct you move on to the next passage for next time, if not she does the same one again. HTH
