I started listening to this on CD with my children. I have always trusted books recommended in HOD. Anyway, there has been a lot of bad language and now it is to a part about feelings she is having when she hugs the captain and how she wants to kiss his hands etc. I stopped the CD at this point to decide if we would listen farther. Can anyone give me more insight about this book? It has not been what I would expect from a HOD recommendation, so far. Please advise.
Thanks!

Re: Questions about Jacob Have I Loved
mattilda,
Our sample book ideas list codes the resource(s) that recommends each book on the list. So, the books on the list are those endorsed multiple places, and we note who recommends that particular book. In looking at how extensive the list is, there is no possible way for us to have personally read every book on the list, which is why we coded the place(s) where the book recommendation comes from.
The booklist is only meant to serve as a list of possible ideas, which is why we hesitated to put one together at all. As always the level of comfort your family would have with any book on the list would be up to you to screen and preview, making a note of those resources which you trust.
If you wish to stick completely with books that HOD fully endorses and recommends, you would instead wish to use one of our very carefully selected book sets for DITHR. Any book we carry on our website has been gone over with a fine-tooth comb. Our bookstore also carries books that we have carefully read and selected. The books we stock and carry in our warehouse are of the highest quality, which is a service we strive to provide for our customers.
We will make a note and remove the book you mentioned from the list when it is updated.
Blessings,
Carrie

Re: Questions about Jacob Have I Loved
I think I remember reading that book as a kid but I do not remember anything about it.
As a rule of thumb I try to at least glance at the first chapter of a book before I give it to my kids or read it to them so there are no surprises. I usually can't do beyond that because who has the time to read every book in advance! I guess if you use books on cd you could listen to the first chapter with headphones or in another room before presenting it to save those
moments!

Re: Questions about Jacob Have I Loved
My dd(12) and I watched an older version film of Jacob Have I Loved. I am grateful I did watch it with her. This was a book/film that was recommended on a different unit study we did through the summer.
I would agree, the content of this particular book and film fits a definite more mature audience than that of early middle and upper elementary grade lvls. I found myself having to pause the movie and encourage vocalization of questions on my pre-teens face. I was able to draw it back to explaining why the movie/book was given its title, and least find a Bibical principal from it. I really wish though I had watched it before hand, because I most surely would have waited another year or two before exposing her to this type of emotions and thinking.
I agree with that it really does fall to your comfort level and exactly what you wish your kiddos to be exposed to.
I hope this helps some.

Thanks for the replies. Carrie, your response was totally clarifying and I hope you don't take my initial post in a defensive way. I was surprised by the content and turned it off. I now understand and feel completely safe with the books your site sells.
Thanks again!
