Started CTC today--a question

Post by SKCarol » Tue Sep 22, 2009 2:29 pm

Yes, I know we are starting late...!!

This is basically our first year of doing HOD, so I am trying to figure things out. Today for CTC I was reading Dinosaurs of Eden for storytime. So I looked at the oral narration tips for teachers. It says to get the student to do the reading themselves if they are able. I had understood that storytime was when I get to read to my children...or should I be letting my daughter read the storytime silently to herself and then narrate to me? Or does the narration tips mean that she could read it aloud to me??? The storytime box is designated as "Teacher-directed", so I would appreciate if someone could clarify this for me!

Thank you.

The way I understood it was that they read everything on their own EXCEPT for the read-alouds. We've done the first two read-alouds together even though she could easily read them on her own.

Hi,

Story Time is designed for the "Teacher" to read to the child; however, you can have the child read it his/herself if you need them to. You would read a chapter or a few pages of the story and then have the child narrate what he/she has heard from one or two paragraphs. The Narration Tips is for both narrations that are being read by the child and read to the child.

Ditto - the idea is for dc to learn to narrate well both when listening to a book and when reading a book silently on their own. Dc are often better at one of these than the other, so it's important to work on both (though as you said, dc do usually narrate better when they read it on their own). Unless you are short on time, I'd read the CTC Storytime out loud to dc, or they won't get to practice narrating from listening.

Thank you, my3sons, for that answer. I really didn't want to give up the opportunity to read to my older daughter!

I appreciate all the replies!
