I really want the book projects to send home grade 4!

Agreed, I would love to find something that will substitute for these books. I wonder if Evan-Moor has anything like this? I'm going to hunt around.

I have the Grade 2 book even though we won't start DITHR until later this year. I think the projects look fun and perhaps wouldn't be too babyish for a 5th grader. Here are some of the projects:
-make a character tube puppet and have the puppet act out part of the story
-cylinder sequence lit kit where the outside of the cylinder (coffee can) displays pictures of the main events of the story and the can holds props so the child can retell the story or part of the story
-detailed diorama
-make a character mask which is poster board decorated like the character with a hole for the students face; the student then gets to wear the mask and act out a part of the story
-main character mobile
That's about 1/2 of the projects in the book so that gives you an idea of what the projects are like. They seem like fun crafts especially for the child who likes crafts and have an element of drama a child who likes that. I'm sure the 4th grade one would be better for that age, but the 2nd grade one might work.
