Question about history spine readings

Post by striving2Bprov31 » Fri Sep 04, 2009 7:56 pm

So far I've done unit one in Bigger Hearts with my 9yo daughter and 7yo son. We really love it! I have decided to bump my 7yo son down to Beyond, thus seperating the kids. If I am doing Bigger with just the 9yo would it be okay if she read the daily history reading to herself?? I would read it ahead of time. The reason I ask is because of what Carrie said on another post. She said that sometimes children narrate better (absorb better) when they read it themselves. I am already finding this is true for her. She is already doing very well at narrrating, and she also works very well with independent reading and work. Do any of you have your children do this with the history spines?? Or is this a no-no? It isn't that I don't want to read with her, I just know that I don't learn as well if I hear it. I have to see the sentence on paper-then it sticks. Anyway, sorry if this is repeating a topic!!

Thank you in advance!!

I need to figure out how to do all of those cute yellow faces over to the right!! And some colors! My posts look very boring!

My 9 (turning 10 next week) year old is reading the CTC history spine on her own. Actually it is scheduled that way. I personally think if she can read it, understand it, and narrate it, then GO FOR IT. ;-) (And do a little happy dance)

I asked this same question and Carrie responded that CM says that if a child is 9 and up and can read the material, then they should. :) My 10 year old is doing Bigger with extensions and he is currently reading ALL of the History and Science on his own. This is how it should be with older kids, I htink. The need that independence. :) Here is that thread. :) viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4632

I just bumped my one using Beyond down to Little Hearts. Neat to see someone else "bumping." :)
