Wondering.....

Post by cdrx4 » Mon Aug 31, 2009 7:24 pm

Hello.
We are going into our 2nd Unit with Bigger and LHFHG. I feel as though there is something my ds could be doing independently, but I am not sure what. I might be going about this the wrong way, but I pretty much read everything to him and also, go over math and english with him. Dont get me wrong, I love to "teach" him, but I also need for him to do something independently, so I dont feel like I have to go back and forth with my dd doing LHGHG....am I wrong? At what point do the "creating good study habits" come into play?
If someone could give me some "wisdom" on maybe going about something different, I am all ears!
Thank you so much.
Blessings....

My 10 year old is doing Bigger, so we REALLY had this issue at first. I got some great advice from Carrie and Julie, as well as the other ladies here on how to help my son be more independent in Bigger. Here is a link to that thread here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4632.

We implemented a lot of what Carrie suggested. My son now does Science on his own on narration days. He reads History and all extensions alone as well. He does Poetry we me as far as reading, but then does his copywork and checks it on his own. He does dictation with me, but checks that on his own as well. We do workboxes and each day, I write him little notes as to what he is to do alone and what he is to do with me. It has really made a difference in our school day. :)

I agree that the tips in the thread linked above should really help with your questions! :D As kiddos get older, I agree that it's so important to move them toward some independence in their school day (both for their maturation and for your sanity)!

When learning to do anything independently for the first while, you can expect a learning curve, as you're asking kiddos to do something new! However, over time both of you will reap the benefits and satisfaction that a little independence can bring.

Hope that helps! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
