OK. It is very clear that they do not have to rewrite the question - just write down the answer, but should the answer be in a complete sentence? Am I being overly detailed? AND in written narration - should I edit their misspelling and grammar? I am.... but I'm not sure if I should be... Thanks!

I didn't require my ds to write in complete sentences for the 5 question science day, but I did expect him to spell things properly. I underlined any misspelled words, and he used his science book to look up the correct spelling and fix it. He eventually just spelled things right as he was doing the assignment.

For written narrations, I required proper spelling and grammar. I had him read it to me out loud first, and that usually helped him correct some things on his own. Next, I underlined anything misspelled, and put any missing punctuation in the margin of the line it was missing from. For example, if he'd missed a period, a put a period in the margin of the line he missed it. Then, I had him fix the errors. I stuck to the alloted amount of sentences (5), and this helped it not be an overwhelming task. The Written Narration tips in the back are very helpful too, and I plan on expecting more this year in CTC. He did well though - I think PHFHG's way of guiding the written narration has helped him feel confident about it, and do well with it. HTH!

Oh my! I even knew that was back there! I think what happened is when I did it with my 8 y.o. we just read the box and proceeded.... I don't even know how I can homeschool without this board! Thank you SO much for both of your answers!

For the science questions, I require a complete sentence and the question must be phrased within the response. That's how R&S English teaches them to answer a question.

So the answer to how do dogs show aggression looked like this...

When a dog feels aggressive he stands up tall, points his ears up, holds his head high with his teeth showing, and raises the hair on his back.

Answers question fully
Uses a complete sentence
Correct spelling

Those are MY rules though.

For written narration, we follow the guidelines in the back of the manual. I just let them get their thoughts out first, then we revise any grammar or spelling that needs to be corrected.
