Seashore & BIGGER

Post by Daisy » Tue Aug 18, 2009 2:51 pm

We heading to the beach for the day tomorrow. Can anyone who has done Bigger give me any ideas for what we could incorporate into our trip to add to my son's seashore study?

Any experiments that would work better at the actual beach, etc?

I would look at the stuff on the side pages of One Small Sea Shore and do all that stuff because it is designed to be done at the beach. But mostly I would try to find a tide pool and observe as much as you can and do it nature book style. Carrie is really good at making the experiments doable at home but there are things on the side about observing your square that would be wonderful to do in person. :D

I wasn't living next to the ocean at the time we did Bigger but we did have a lake we went to often that summer. We took pictures of the birds there. We collected shells and water plants. We even tried collecting minnows and tadpoles. We would talk about our trip to the lake and then about the ocean and how they are different and similar. We have back home and near the ocean and again I took the kids down and we took pictures and looked in the rocks for critters and got some water plants and we got home and talked about when we did that book. My daughter loves the ocean and she made the diagram thing that is mention in all of the One Square books. We also made pictures with the water plants and gave them to my parents to hang in their bathroom which is ocean themed.

Today Audrey drew some pictures of things you find living on the shore and things living in the tide. She copied them from the book, but maybe you could have Dragonfly draw them from real life examples. Have fun at the beach!! 8)

Bring back some sand. I have used oats and sugar and would have much rather had sand.
