Hi there!
I was on the Singapore website looking at placement for my ds when I noticed that for the average 1st grader they don't include 1B, only 1A. Then they recommend 1B and 2A for the average 2nd grader. I hadn't realized that when I ordered for my dd who will be beginning LHFHG in 2 weeks. She'll be considered 1st grade and will turn 6 in 2 weeks.
So.......should I only figure on getting through 1A with her for this year and continue to 1B with her for 2nd grade? (I have the Beyond guide for the "hands on" instruction for SM level 1.) Or.......should we just go through the Beyond guide as it is?
Just wondering what others using SM for 1st grade have done. Thanks for the help!
God bless, Michelle

I did 1A and 1B for 1st grade. And actually my child that is just going into first grade is part way through 1A so I expect she might finish on 2A. I let them go to their own ability. But at any rate I would not worry about going ahead and doing 1A and 1B for first grade.

As long as your child is ready for 1A you should be fine and if you find you need to slow down later then that is fine too.

HTH. That's what we did for my two that have used Singapore.

My 2nd grader is in 1B right now, so she'll do 1B, 2A, and maybe a little bit of 2B in 2nd grade, and will do 2B/3A for 3rd grade, and so on.
My 1st grader is pretty "mathy", so he's almost done with 1A (and he just turned 6 a couple of weeks ago). The plan is 1A/1B for him, but at the pace he's been going, he'll get into 2A in 1st grade too, unless I slow him down (I have extra practice and challenging word problems books, so I might have him do those too).
So, it really is very individual. Start with 1A in 1st grade but be willing to go faster or slower if you need to.

We did 1A/1B with the Beyond plans with my oldest ds for first grade, and now we are doing 1A/1B for first grade with my middle ds for first grade. The hands-on plans in the Beyond guide have been key in helping our dc be successful with math, and both readily say math is one of their favorite subjects (I'm sure this is due to the hands-on plans because they're fun to do and make math easy to understand). I'd start with 1A/1B and the Beyond plans with your dd and do it as it written. Unless it becomes way too hard (and keep in mind all skills taught are not meant to be mastered the first time around), I'd keep that pace. You can always slow it down if need be, but I would not speed it up as Singapore gets hard fast enough.

Could I have messed it up any more.

Why does that always get me messed up. It's a simple nomenclature system. There is only 1A, 1B the 2A and 2B. Thank you for pointing that out. I did mess it up. I tried to fix it but the point is we used the 1 series A&B for first grade. My youngest started and is almost done with 1A in K. So I let them land where they may I guess.

Thank you for pointing that out to me.

Oh, no worries at all! I just wanted to clarify since I had the same question as the OP. I figured that's what you meant.
