We didn't read them and did just fine. But I might not be a good person to say because we didn't technically finish Bigger (we started mid-year and are now moving on to Preparing).
What I've done with some books for Preparing tho is I go to Amazon and type in the name of the book, like Tirzah. Up it comes with reviews, but also other books like it. Then I can read the reviews, since there are other homeschoolers there that read childrens hist fiction, and find one or two that will do nicely for the time period, then I toggle on over to my library online catalog and see if they have it. If so, then I make a note that I can get such and so title when I need it. It's just a way for me to economize. As much as I'd love to build a fabulous home library right now, I just can't buy every single book.
I have also used Paperbackswap quite a lot. And I figure the ones I get from there I will turn around and list again later. Especially some of the very girl interest - my next child is a boy so I don't feel the need to save lots of the more girl interest ones. I also got almost all of my history readers and science books off PBS. Now I am going to start entering in wishes for some of the CTC ones to give myself a year to collect what I can.
Do you have a support group in your area? If so, you may want to ask around about borrowing some certain titles too. I have found some similar books between Sonlight and MWF to name a few.
Good luck!
