Intro & Question About DITHOR

Post by jibaker103 » Mon Jul 20, 2009 12:20 pm

I pulled my son 1/2 through 7th grade ps last January. Today is our official 1st day of 8th grade and I just discovered the wonderful curriculum DITHOR. My son does not like to narrate or discuss the books he reads even though he is a voracious reader, reading way above grade level. I thought this would be a way to gently move him towards literary analysis. I need advice on how to use this with an older student. Will it work for an 8th grader? Are there extensions to use for part of 9th or 10th grade English credit? Do I need both the teacher manual and student workbook? Does anyone have suggestions on how to find this curriculum used? Is there anything else I need to know before purchasing and jumping in? I appreciate everyone's help in this matter!!

Welcome to the Board, Jennifer! :D We are so glad to have you here. We've used DITHOR for a lot of years, and I think you and your ds are going to love it! :) It will definitely work for an eighth grader, and I know moms have used it in ninth grade as well. You do need both the Teacher's Manual and the 6/7/8 Student Book. I wrote a lengthy "why I love DITHOR" post not long ago and will link you to that in case you're interested:

P.S. One of the HOD Board's rules prohibits discussion of buying HOD's products elsewhere - used or new.

Thank you for the warm welcome Julie. Sorry for breaking a rule in my first post!!! My only excuse is that I was so excited to post I didn't bother to look at the rules. I will take the time to do so very soon. I appreciate the link it was exactly what I needed to read!

Oh, that's alright- I just didn't want you to wonder why no one was responding to that part of the post. I'm so glad you found HOD. DITHOR is such a stand-out reading program. We've enjoyed it so much in our home, and I hope you do too! :D

Jennifer,

We're glad to have you here! My3sons did a great job of answering your questions. I agree that you'll want both the manual and the Student Book to have the complete program. If you order a 6/7/8 package, you'll also get the Booklist along with your package. The Booklist is full of terrific book suggestions for each genre and each level in the program. You are also welcome to use your own book selections if you prefer, as any book you choose works with DITHR. :D

You are so wise to get a jump start on literature study prior to your son entering high school, as it is a required component in high school in every state for at least 3 years of high school. DITHR will do an excellent job of preparing your child for the higher level literature study required. You can use DITHR for credit for 9th grade lit., as long as you add a writing component, and some grammar study. You may want to peek at Write with the Best Vol. II for high school. We carry Write with the Best Vol. I for middle school. Here's that link: http://www.heartofdakota.com/hearts-for ... e-the-best

Together, DITHR, grammar, and some comp. will cover your English credit for high school.

Blessings,
Carrie
