Preparing Hearts Encyclopedia...

Post by Great2kids » Fri Jul 17, 2009 3:10 pm

For the research skills part of Preparing does anyone have a certain encyclopedia that worked well for them or one you could recommend? My son will be turning 9 soon after we start Preparing this year.

Thanks!!

I am also curious. Especially if there in an online one. We just completed week 1, and dd had difficulty that day. I think she has a grasp on how to SEARCH for information online, but all of the sites we looked at were not at her reading level!! They were VERY difficult to wade through. Even wikipedia (for the coat of arms topic). I saw that Britannica has a kid's encyclopedia online, but you have to subscribe. I'd be willing to subscribe to something, but free would be even better. Or I'll send her over to my parents' house to use my old 1980 World Books. :D

We have a set of World Books in our house, but Preparing says you can use any encylopedia or wikipedia.com. We usually just used wikipedia for the assignments. :D

I'm loving the looks of Britannica Encyclopedia student addition. It's $69.99/yr though. Still far cheaper than a set of encyclopedias but expensive none-the-less. It might actually be worth it for my 5th grade daughter who loves to research topics. I've discouraged internet searching just because of all the junk out there.

Course a trip to the library is pretty close to free. ;-)

Just noticing from searching around Daisy's suggestion that there is a deal to be had http://store.britannica.com/jump.jsp?it ... temID=1344 Get the reference CD for 40 bucks and get a year free online membership. That gives you something extra plus a year of the online encyclopedia. :D

I bought this at costco http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... d=11314114 It has the encyclopedia brittanica learning suite in it, but it doesn't list it on the box for some reason. It's on sale for$19.99 plus the games that come with it. The spelling game is good, that's the only one we've used so far.
