Question for Julie

Hi Julie,
I noticed some posts in which you mentioned your ds wrote some poems. I think this was when you were in Preparing last year? Is there a writing program I am supposed to be doing with PHFHG? Is it just the day when they are instructed to rewrite a few lines of the RLS poems? If so he really got creative with it!

I'm not Julie, but I can answer your question. The creative writing lessons that go along with the Robert Louis Stevenson poems in Preparing Hearts continue to get more in-depth and more "creative" as the year goes on. So, the kiddos really grow as poetry writers and are gently moved to write more and more of their poems on their own. The Rod and Staff grammar lessons also include poetry study and writing, so this paired with Preparing Hearts gives kiddos a great foundation for writing creatively! I was so surprised at the poems my own son wrote along with Preparing Hearts last year. He made a book of his poems, and they are a treasure to me!

Oh, OK I should have looked further ahead. I should have known you would gradually increase or change up their creative writing day with RLS. I think Julie's son's poems are Wonderful, so I look forward to seeing what my dc will do with that. I have a 19yo ds who loves to read and write poetry and I know what you mean about it being a treasure. He is a boy after my own heart with the poetry and old books. We'll see what the ds who is a boy after his dad's own heart will come up with.

Hi Leah! I was out of town and just read this. I will have to tell my ds about what you said about his poems - he will be so pleased. As Carrie said, the modeling part of the lessons becomes less and less as the year progresses, and the dc gradually take over to become the poet. My ds's first poetry was not nearly as lovely as his later poetry - I am so proud of how far he has come, and it truly is the first time he has really embraced creative writing. His cousin (who is very creative) just typed all of Wyatt's poems from PHFHG and put pictures with them in a booklet. He gave it to Wyatt as a surprise gift, and Wyatt was so proud. I enjoyed looking back to his first poems because I really didn't remember them well - it was neat to see how he'd grown. It will be such fun to see your ds's poetry writing grow and change over time time too - thanks for asking!
