We have purchased the Deluxe Set for History as well as the Extensions. I am wondering if it would be ok for ds to read aloud the deluxe assigned reading and I read aloud the Extensions. On some days he would read independently, but I just don't want to miss all these great stories! We will also be doing DITHOR, so he will read aloud and independently with that as well too. Plus we have bedtime reading, some nights I read aloud and some he reads on his own. Does this sound like a good mix and balance...? He also reads various materials on his own as well... kid magazine subsciptions stuff, as well as other children's literature... any input welcome! Thanks!

Your ds is doing great with his reading! That's so nice to hear. I think that because your ds is 9 yo, this would be a great idea, as long as it doesn't get to be too much reading for ds or for you. His first and foremost focus for reading should be with DITHOR and the reading instruction you do with that. As long as it doesn't interfere with his passion for DITHOR, and as long as it doesn't add too much length to your day and prevent you from doing the rest of the HOD plans in the day to day - I say, "GO FOR IT!" For your purposes, I think this makes total sense and will be a fun way to add great books to your day because you are a family that loves to read!

Note:
For the rest of the readers of this post, if you are doing PHFHG, the younger dc in the target age ranges of 8-10 would normally do only the Deluxe package and not the Extension package, and the older dc ages 11-12 would normally do the Extension Package only and not the Deluxe Package. Just thought I'd tack on this note for those of you with older dc doing the extensions!

For the rest of the readers of this post that have older dc doing the extension package for BHFHG, I'd plan on you reading aloud the Deluxe titles to all of your dc ages 7-11, and your older dc reading silently the Extension titles. The Deluxe Storytime titles were chosen because they are great books to read out loud, and the Extension package books were chosen because they are great books to be read silently - independently - by older dc. Older children gain much from doing the Extension package independently, and that is part of what makes it more difficult for older students to do. In other words, it is what makes the extension beef up the program enough for them (along with making sure they do the response activities noted in the Appendix).

No, sorry - I was forgetting we were talking about PHFHG, where the Deluxe Package is for the Independent History box. In the BHFHG guide, the Storytime is the Deluxe package. Thanks for asking this. I'll change my post. For PHFHG, your younger dc would do only the Deluxe and your older dc would do only the Extension. Sorry for the confusing post!

The way I understand it is this: Younger child will read the deluxe package independently for the independent history box and the Older child will read the extension package independently for the independent history box (schedule is found in the appendix). Julie told me this the other day I think.

However I have started taking turns with my older child reading paragraphs aloud from the extension pack as I found he was struggling a little bit. I may also do this with my younger dd once she gets out of Draw and Write. Depends on how well she does.

I believe that CTC is like Preparing in that the extension age kids use only the extension package. See Julies reply above to my question about doing both
Only Bigger does both as the deluxe is for that storytime, not independent History.Rebecca

Hi Sharyn! This is a good question. In CTC, the extension age dc (which would be ages 12-13) should do both the Independent History box and the Extension Package, along with the suggested follow-up assignments in the Appendix. They should also do the rest of what is planned in the HOD guide (including listening to the Storytime, which for CTC is whatever Basic Package you chose - there are 3 options to choose from). As always, LA and math should be upped accordingly for older dc. Carrie is writing, but I checked with her to make sure. For the future guides coming after CTC, it will probably be this way as well, since the extension age dc will need that rigor to up the level for them.
