This is really interesting and thought provoking. It really shows the changes in the school system over the years.
This site has the 1895 8th grade exit exam...Could you have passed the 8th grade exit exam from 1895?

I couldn't pass that test today, let alone in high school or 8th grade. The true aim of the public school system is not well educated students, but rather, barely literate workers. The less we know and understand of the world around us and the country we live the more those in government can control us and propagandize us. IMHO the public school system is evil through and through, though there are many teachers who strive to truly educate their students they battle against Satan himself. I truly believe that if your children are in public school they will be fighting this battle also.

Val,

I just saw this this morning when a friend posted the link of facebook. Nancy, I didn't pass it either. It is very sad the direction that our public education system has taken. I am thankful that we currently have the freedom to homeschool and change that direction. :D

I know I wouldn't have passed no matter how long they gave me to come up with some of the answers. :D
It makes me rethink all the previous generations that say they only had an 8th grade education

I took that test Val - and no I didnt pass.I went to school in 1970's England when they decided that teaching grammar was pointless. So we never got taught about nouns and verbs - of course that had a knock on effect when they tried to teach us French at 12 and we had no idea what nouns and verbs were .
I took the test with my 16 year old daughter- who did a little better than me on the grammar but worse on the math claculations.I am amazed that they were only in school 7 months of the year
