Using Singapore 1B for 2nd grade

Hello guys,

I need some advice. I have two first graders (dd-8 and ds-7) who are on unit 25 of LHFHG and will be continuing through the summer with it to finish it up to do Beyond for 2nd grade. One of the reasons we have taken it this slowly is that they are not understanding the math quickly enough to move on to the next day's lesson. We just completed Exercise 31 in 1B. They have both had tremendous trouble understanding "tens" & "ones" places, and how to subtract or add by more than 0-9. My dd has moderate to severe expressive/receptive language delays and short term memory problems. I guess my question is whether to continue on in 1B, or slow them down, so that thy are continuing in 1B when they start Beyond. I know Singapore is advanced, and with the current pace, they would be doing 3A/3B in 3rd grade, 4A/4B in 4th grade, and that concerns me! My dd-10 completed 3A/3B as 4th grade and ds-almost 9 completed 2A/2B as 3rd grade, and both of them are very quick learners and bright kids! These 2 coming up are much, much slower learners, however, they never went to public school and the older two did. Maybe they don't have to "relearn" the Singapore way, and I just don't realize what a difference it will make for them. Could I reasonably expect them to actually be ahead of the older two math-wise when they reach 3rd and 4th grade?

I have Math Mammoth as well, and I can easily use it to review and cement simple addition and subtraction for the remainder of the summer with LHFHG. But, as Singapore does things in a different order than American math, they will not have had 1B's time telling OR money in 1st grade. I know that was on their standardized testing, and I understand not to expect them to know those things, but I do have to report their scores to my county. Could I skip from Exercise 32 to Exercise 44 (telling time), or should I just not worry about what grade or order they will be learning things and rest in the Singapore method?

And, one final thought. I have 9 weeks left of LHFHG. Could I just completely stop for the summer and have them do the remainder of it as 2nd graders? I do worry that doing nothing at all with them this summer will be problematic, especially for dd due to her learning delays.

Sorry for the long post. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this, and can't seem to come up with a "best" plan.

Hi Lisa! When we did tens and ones, it took a bit for my dc to understand that as well. I wouldn't worry about that as of yet - they're young, and it will cycle back around. At that age, it is meant to be more of an introductory skill anyway. I'd finish LHFHG without letting the math slow you down. LHFHG has target ranges for 5-7 year olds, so I wouldn't stretch it out into 2nd. grade. You'd feel so good about finishing LHFHG and looking ahead to Beyond! And the math will continue to get easier with HOD's hands-on plans reinforcing the skills in Beyond and Bigger. :D

In Christ,
Julie

Lisa,

I agree that I wouldn't let math dictate the speed at which you complete LHFHG. At the K level math programs are not assuming kiddos will master tens and ones. This is more of a second grade mastery skill. So, this is meant to only be an exposure. Just move on, as your kiddos will get it again. :D
