Starting LHFHG tomorrow!! (and a question)

Post by thehergatts » Wed Jun 10, 2009 7:01 pm

I'm so excited! DS4 (he'll be 5 next month) wants to get started now instead of waiting until the fall, so I'm gonna run with it! We are going to do half-speed until the fall and then pick it up. We did our first RME lesson today and he really enjoyed it.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with DS3.5. He wants so badly to start Kindergarten like his brother and truthfully he most likely could handle the material, but I don't want him to be so far ahead. Any suggestions? He has already done LHTH with his brother last year, but I could probably repeat it and do the "older student" activities. Has anyone done this?

Looking forward to tomorrow!!

I know ds is jumping at the bit to start his kinder stuff. He waited for it in the mail and now that it is here he wants to do it but I scheduled us to start the first week of July so he only has 3 weeks to go. I am repeating LHTH with my dd(3yr) who tagged along with ds last year and letting her do the Rod and Staff pre-school workbooks so she can "do school" with us. She was barely 2 when we started so I know she can still learn alot from repeating it.

What about taking both of your kids half-pace thru the whole year? or at least keep them together for the Learning history side and you could step it up to full speed for your older later and then they could just do their own levels of reading , etc.

it sounds like your kids are about a year ahead starting than mine were. both my kids did LHTH starting at 3.5 yrs of age and their were breaks in btwn.

my kids are currently 4 and 3months and 5 and 8 months. they are 16 1/2 months apart. i will have taken about 2yrs to complete LHFHG next spring. i will be starting the Learning thru History side with the kids together. my daughter was (is) doing LHTH right now (your younger is already done).so while my son started the learning basics side of LHFHG, she did LHTH . then when they combine the LHFHG Learning history, my son will continue on with his level in Math,(Math-u-see), we will do something different with Phonics to bridge the gap btwn curriculum guides, we will start handwriting since we didn't do that part of Learning Basics all year, and we will pick our own story time books to fill in the gap btwn curriculum guides. i didn't want to just stop phonics , math etc. and yet i didn't want him to jump to BLHFHG for Learning Basics and be in two guides. His sister will always be in two guides. but at least they will share the Learning History side.
it is because i started the Learning Basics side with him first to allow his sister to catch up with him for the Learning History side of LHFHG.
i hope this makes sense. just trying to explain how it worked for us with them being almost 1 1/2 yrs apart.

you have an advantage that you can start them both with the Learning History side if you think your younger is ready for it. My younger wasn't ready and hadn't done LHTH and that is why we started the way we did. my two will eventually be together for the Learning History side and just doing Learning Basics side at their level. i will be happy and so will they because they love doing things together. the younger just doesn't understand that sometimes she isn't ready to do the same things as big brother :(

anyway , i hope this made sense and is helpful.

It is helpful. Thanks!

I think we have come up with a plan that will work for our family (for now anyway!).

DS4 is doing LHFHG at half-speed until the fall. DS3 is repeating LHTH with a lot of extras thrown in and he loves it! He wants "Mommy" time and he wants to use the computer, so we have a few simple computer things he is doing and he is getting cuddle time with me.

I think it is going to work.

This sounds like a great plan for your family, Kristy! I'm so glad your dc are thriving with HOD - my dc loved doing LHTH and LHFHG too. We made some wonderful memories together. I know you will too! :D
