But I am trying to figure this all out.

Is each book for just one year or does the child use it for 2 yrs with appropriate grade level math, science, etc....?

This is not a dumb question. :) If you look at the guides they state that they are from ages 6-8, or 8-10, etc. I can see how you may think it should last more than a year. However, each guide is written to cover one school year. I do know that some of the ladies have gone slower, especially with the younger ages, and extended it to 1.5 or 2 years, by taking 2 days to cover one day of plans. I plan to use LHFHG as soon as I get it, and also use it into next year. I expect it will last until the end of the school year because even when I start I will just be doing one page a day instead of 2 pages of plans a day. With my two older children we will be using BHFHG and only for 1 school year. Hopefully some of the ladies who have extended the guides will add their 2 cents to explain how they did it. Hope this helped some.

I Did little hands for his glory for first grade in one year then the next year we did beyond for second grade but I got sick so we lost a lot of school time. We finished that up by October last year and now were are in Bigger. For a while due to the amount of writing we only did 1/2 a lesson at a time. Now we are back up to a lesson a day (but I'm not stressing if we don't finish in time).

One of this programs strengths is that you can track a 8 and a 10 year old though the same book. Or use it over 2 years with one child.

every thing I've ever used for schooling has lasted way longer then the intended time frame! :D We tend to skip around or take days off, follow an interest and then come back to the curriculum, etc. So while yes, each guide is designed for a year's worth of study, it's completely adjustable for as long as you would like to use it! :-) In fact, that's the part of it that makes it perfect for us-there's no guilt if we don't do "day one" on MONDAY. We can do day one whenever we decide day one is!

Hi! There is not a dumb question - just look at the thread on quotes and you'll realize we are all more than willing to lay our true selves out there for all to see (and smile at)! I have done some of the HOD programs in a year, and some in a 1 1/2 years, and some in 2 years. Here's the reasoning for me...
*we started young with my first ds (I couldn't wait to get started); then, because I raced through all of the HOD programs, I raced right past his ability level and had to take a year off of HOD between LHFHG and BLHFHG and do a hodge-podge of other stuff (this was a sad year for me, but a good reminder of why I am doing HOD)
*having learned from this, with my second ds, we took a 1 1/2 to do LHTH, starting to do it only 3 days a week at first, and then moving into 4 days a week, then 5 days; my oldest son did Beyond... in a year
*after LHTH, my middle ds was not totally ready for an entire day of LHFHG - he loves to just go off and play, forever! So, it was a perfect fit for him to do one page of plans one day, and the second page of plans the next day.... that is until...
*about 3 weeks ago, when he began wanting to do ALL of LHFHG, and was actually ready for this; he also began reading BOB books at this time, so all in all, we'll finish LHFHG in around a 1 1/2 years; my oldest son will finish Bigger... in a year (he's a firstborn and definitely a finisher!)

Sometimes in the past we have done a 4 day school week, taking Fridays for other things. That of course also impacted when we finished things. So, that is why it has taken differing amounts of time to finish HOD programs for me. It has been a huge relief to me to give myself permission to finish a program the next year. We began this year in the middle of LHFHG with second ds, and it was like "coming home to an old friend" when we started the year. My oldest ds, on the other hand, started Bigger..., which was exciting to me to start something different with him. It was a nice balance for us to begin the year! HOD's age allotments allow for this ebb and flow, so why not take advantage of it? That's my take on it - HTH!
