Independent Bible Study for 8yodd

DD spends literally hours laying awake in bed at night. She loves to read so we usually let her read for 30 min. to an hour before going to sleep only to find her still awake even at midnight sometimes! We've already tried melatonin per a neurologists orders and it worked for a while, but no longer. So, I had an idea...a Bible study! How peaceful is that?! (I need to get back into my HOD devotional too! ahhh...peaceful :D )
She has enjoyed doing a devotional at night but has outgrown the "little girl" ones and the topics of the older girl ones (ages 8 or 9+) are well, not something fitting for her! (boys, school issues, etc.). I think I'd like to get her an Bible study she can do independently at night in hopes she'll drift to sleep with the Bible on her heart and mind-- and hopefully find peace in it and get some sleep for a change. Does anyone know of a good choice for this? Something that maybe addresses character issues or obedience specifically? Or even survey studies of the OT or NT...anything right for an 8yo to do on her own really! She loves having to look up scripture to find answers, too... (learned this when she finished the first 3 Scripture Sleuth books in 2 days). This would be in addition to HOD bible, not in place of. It would be great if I could work it out to fit some of the traits we are studying in HOD, but not a necessity.

Thanks for ideas!

How about Kay Arthur's Discover 4 Yourself series for kids? They are inductive Bible studies. I'd definitely start her out with Jonah (the simplest) and see how she likes it.

Another thing that has always helped my kids is the Bible on CD. They love to listen to it at bedtime. Very soothing.

Hi,
We found some great bible studies for kids & preteens at http://www.trainupstudies.com/. We purchased, but have not yet started due to ds' young age, "Choosing Obedience" and "Choosing Self-Control". They say "K5-2nd gr requires adult supervision" (because of the reading/writing needed) or "3rd-5th self-study." There's also choosing kindness, humility, responsibility and thankfulness for elementary age. They're written by a homeschooling mom, and they look great. HTH :)

Hi,

We have an avid reader as well. Have you looked at answers in genesis? They have lots of reading and bible study for young children on their website. Or Veritas Press, but this could be pricey. Our son's grandparents have a set of bible encyclopedias (sorry I can't remember the name now) that were passed on to them and he started reading those on his own. The mention of bible on cd to relax reminded me of how we have used music to soothe our children when they are sick: Twila Paris' lullaby cd and Steve Halpern has wonderfully relaxing instrumental cds (we can't listen to this when we are eating because we slow down and relax so that the meal just goes on and on).

Great ideas ladies!

I am especially fond of the Self-Control one b/c this is something dd NEEDS to study. I think the others mentioned would be interesting for her though. We'll see!
