New to Homeschooling & HOD, Advice Appreciated

Post by NC Homeschool Mom » Thu Jun 04, 2009 8:12 pm

:D Hello! I am brand-new to homeschooling and have three boys, ages 5, 3, and almost 1. My son would be entering K in the fall, but we feel that the Lord is leading us to homeschool. I am very excited to have come across HOD and feel like I've found exactly what I've been looking for and am encouraged to jump in and start on this journey! After *much* deliberation, we are planning to start with Little Hearts for His Glory. I feel like he could do Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory, he's sort-of in between in a lot of the fields on the placement chart, but I definitely don't want to jump ahead and then feel like I've missed something essential.

Anyway, I'd like to tell you about my oldest DS and get advice on what I could/should get to supplement LHFHG. He turned 5 in January but has always been brilliant ( :D ); he talked early, has always had a huge vocabulary, is very mature for his age, and is currently reading the Narnia series on his own. We incorporate learning into everyday; it's never been something I've "tried" to do, we just discuss things as they come up. For example, he understands a lot of math because we divide an orange in half, then into quarters, and then into eighths. He understands that 2/8 = 1/4, etc. He recently has shown interest in multiplication and seems to understand the concept behind it, not simply memorizing the tables. He understands money and knows what coin is which value. He can tell digital time and does pretty good with the other kind (what it's called is escaping me right now! ). He can write all uppercase and lowercase letters, although he does get mixed up sometimes with writing them backwards (ie, mirror image). He's left-handed, if that matters. He loves science and is always doing little experiments on his own, and he loves to read and watch videos on the National Geographic site. He has a memory that astounds me! I think it's safe to say that in a normal school setting, he'd be classified as "gifted" (and his preschool teacher even mentioned that on his evaluation this year). He is also interested in geography and loves Bible stories - we have read through the Egermeier's Bible Story book probably three times now over the last several years. He loves memorizing Scripture and does quite well with it, and his Sunday school teachers assure me that he fits right in with his much older classmates (the next youngest in there is 8, I believe, going all the way up to age 12) and feels comfortable doing Bible drills and answering questions.

I guess my concern is getting exactly what I'll need to make sure that I'm giving him a good, solid foundation but also challenging him and teaching him new things. I'd like my 3-year-old to be able to participate some with us in the beginning of this homeschooling journey, and I think that I'd feel better going through all of the K-level stuff with DS1 to make sure that everything's been covered. I realize that we might breeze through it, which is why I'd like to order anything else that I need to supplement it or enrich his experience so that even if it is a review, he'll still enjoy it. Do I even need phonics since he's reading at such an advanced level, though? And should I start with the K version of math, given that he seems to be familiar with the concepts mentioned in the overview of it, or would it be wise to move on to the 1st grade level? I am of the mindset right now that if I buy something and discover that he needs something more advanced, I can always save it for the other little guys when they are ready...on the other hand, money is tight, and I'd rather be able to put it towards what we need and any extras to supplement rather than something that might be too basic. :D I'd appreciate any advice, thoughts, or experience! I'd love to order in the next week or two but don't feel confident that I know exactly what I should get. Thanks in advance!

:D Welcome to HOD! :D

You're going to have so much fun teaching your little guys! I know that I love being able to have all the interaction with my kids as we discuss so many things. We sent Grant to a small Christian school for 2 years...and I just really missed having him around all day. (Although my ears do get a little tired some days... )

I think you will be fine with LHFHG this year. I know that as you move through HOD's programs, you'll be so pleased with the rich literature to keep your bright little guy's mind engaged. This was Grant's 1st year with HOD, and we did Bigger. He's also a strong learner, and we found Bigger to be plenty rich this year. I think if I were you, I'd use A Reason for Handwriting A so that your son gets to copy whole Bible verses every week (rather than just letters in the K level). You could also use the Thinking Skills book rather than the R&S fine motor skills books if he's strong with his fine motor skills. I think you'd be fine with either the K or 1st science text. I haven't actually looked at those, but I believe they follow the same scope and sequence. The K text is scheduled right in the daily boxes of plans, and the 1st has an alternate schedule in the appendix. (I think I remember Carrie saying that she actually preferred the K text.)

For reading, I'm thinking that you'd want to get the Beyond guide and use the emerging reader schedule in the appendix. It sounds like your little guy is reading really well. If I were you I'd start with the Beginners Bible (it's the harder of the 2), and go through these books. I'm guessing your son doesn't need lots of practice with actually reading the words in the books, but going through this set through the year would be good to improve his ability to read aloud fluently and with comprehension as these are important reading skills, too. Carrie has scheduled questions daily to go along with this set to help with comprehension. Once you finish those, you ds could move into DITHOR the following year. This year you could also just make plenty of books available to read in his free time as well. (The lessons for the emerging readers are short, so if he really likes to read he'll probably want more to read on his own.)

I haven't used the younger years of Singapore yet, so I can't tell you anything from experience there. It sounds like maybe going with level 1A would be an appropriate place to start. The hands on activities for this level of Singapore are also scheduled in the Beyond guide. :D Hopefully someone else can tell you what they think there.

Happy Homeschooling!

NC Homeschooling Mom,
Welcome!! :D
I'm so excited for you and your boys! How wonderful that you found HOD and will be able to start with it from the beginning of your homeschooling experience. :D I have been really blessed to have found it, too. It affords me such a great quality of experience with my boys. We love it!
I thought all of Katherine's ideas sounded right on. You'll also be pleased to see a list in the back of the LHFHG guide for "Reading about History: Optional Literature Supplements" that correspond with the theme for each unit. Many of these will be books you can find at a library.
As for math, I wonder if you can at least look thru the 2A & 2B with your son this summer just to make sure he doesn't miss something. Plus he'd become familiar with the Singapore ways of looking at things (then you could save the workbooks for your next son, since the K ones aren't too expensive and are going out of print) then I bet he'd be fine to start with the Primary 1A &1B but I'm always scared to skip ahead for the fear of missing something. I guess since I'm a newbie. Have you checked out the singapore website?

I believe that Primary 1 is the first level that can be tested for and it is an exit test. So, you'd get an idea of what you'd be covering with him in the 1st grade workbooks. HTH!
Again, I'm truly excited for you to begin your hs journey with HOD.
Blessings,
Victoria

Thank you both so very much for your replies! It is so helpful to hear from others who've "been there, done that" before. I have been feeling a little overwhelmed with all of the choices available (but what a blessing!) and am thankful to have narrowed it down to what I know will be a fantastic curriculum. I am also excited to have access to and become an active member of such a wonderful community - what a great resource! I will definitely look at everything you both mentioned and will have my son take that placement test on the singapore site. We are heading to the lake this weekend, and I told my dear husband that I would love to sit down once we get back and place my order. I feel like I will be ready to do that soon, especially with this helpful advice from you all. Thanks again, I look forward to sharing the journey with you all!

Thanks again for the help! Today is our first (full) day back from the lake, and all three boys have napped long enough for me to figure out what I wanted and to actually order! Unbelievable! :D

I ended up going with Little Hearts for His Glory basic and economy packages with the K level for science, the 1st grade level for math (Singapore 1A & 1B), Thinking Skills, and I ordered the Rod & Staff workbooks separately. I also chose A Reason for Handwriting A.

I am very excited to receive this order and get started with homeschooling! Nothing says that I have to wait until this fall, right? I'd love to actually go ahead and start in the next week or two, just to dip our toes in the homeschooling waters and to allow for a break in August when I will start keeping my friend's 5-month-old (I'm sure I'll need that adjustment time from going to my three boys to mine plus another little boy!). I never thought I'd be this excited to start, but I really am! Everything seems so well put together, I love how it's all based on the Bible and God's word, and I know that He's going to lead me and fill in any gaps that we may encounter (likely with my teaching...!). What a relief to have decided and ordered!!!!!
