how to decide what type of reader you have

I am not sure how to classify my daughter, she can read on her own but she still needs help with some words and she tends to add or skip words if she is reading too fast. She will be 7 in June. With the skipping and adding would she still qualify as independant?

I *think* she might need to start part-way through the emerging readers. Can you tell us what kind of books she is reading without adding/skipping words or needing help?

You might also find more info if you search the boards using the words "emerging reader". I know there was a post about this recently that might help you decide! :D

Its in every book she reads, cuz she just reads too fast at times, like I do. I think her brain may interpet in its own way what may come next or what would make sense to her before she gets there. But she reads Dr. Suess, the FROOOOGY books, the if you give a mouse series, she is in A BEKA grade 1 from being in a christian school for most of 1st grade if that helps at all.

Thanks

Hummmm, it sounds like she is ready to start the emerging readers to me? I'm not an expert though!

My daughter was like that at 7. I started her on the emerging readers for her second grade. Some of the books we went thru quickly like the bible story book but slowed when we got to the chapter books. She's 9 now and reads at a 4th/5th grade level with little help. All reading books are read outloud because she likes to read all school related books outloud.

I agree to start the emerging readers at the beginning. I think you'll both be happy there and her abilities and confidence should grow! It will also teach her to slow down and digest what she's reading b/c there will be questions in the plans that she'll need to answer after reading the pages. :D

I also agree that the Emerging Reader's Set sounds like the perfect place for your child to begin. I'd choose the Beginner's Bible and then just follow the Emerging Reader's plans in the Appendix of your HOD guide each day, doing the readings and questions as scheduled to raise your child's reading level to a beginning chapter book level by the end of the year. :D

Blessings,
